Hey -

What is everyone's opinion of the best international (not US) destination for sport climbing in the summer? I've got a month in August and I want to head someplace fantastic where the heat won't keep me from climbing every day.

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick

What are you looking for (grade, multipitch, singlepitch, are long approaches ok)? If you specify this, it will be easier to give you appropriate information. The choice is so huge...

A lot of it goes on gear from what i have seen, depends on what you want to carry?

I climb up to 5.11, bloted lines only. Single or multipitch are doable. Long approaches are not a problem so long as I can camp and have a ton to climb.

Paklenica,Croatia

Next to the beach. Over 1,000 routes. The Croatian government just spent 2 million euro on cleaning the area up, new anchors, new bolts etc etc. You have everything from 5.8 to 5.14. Single pitch lines to the 300m Anica Kuk.

or....(like I am) hit up Ceuse!

Paklenica is usually a weekend trip for me as I'm not that far away.

God I'm jealous...
Hey, I've never been to eastern europe, switzerland, croatia (is that in eastern europe??) But I was wondering, what's the flight costs like? And also, is it quite an ordeal, like lots of transfers, or pretty easy to get there?
Have a great time. How many people you going with?

Contrary to popular belief, El Potrero Chico is a great place to climb in the summer. The heat is not extreme, and the way the walls are oriented there is always shade.

If you climb up to 5.11 I would say skip Ceuse. It's a stunningly beautiful place but (imo) it doesn't have a month's worth of 5.11 and under routes. For me, the routes at Ceuse that were really world class were 7c and up.

I would say the same for Rodellar. It's a killer place, very beautiful, but the routes under 7b+ or so just weren't that great (with a few exceptions).

Arco Italy. It has tons of sport climbing from single pitch to 20 pitch. It is located just north of Lake Garda which is a huge lake in northern italy famous for wind surfing. There are thousands of routes within 1/2 hour. The Dolomites are also with about 1 1/2 hours. The town is beautiful with a real Mideval charm. The are plenty of accomodations from camping to hotels. I flew into Munich and drove which was about 4 hours. I think Venice is a bit closer. If you wait till the end of August and the beginning of September the rockmasters will be going on and there will be thousands of climbers there(maybe not so good) Beautiful place with lots to offer. Great mountainbiking and hiking on off days.
