I saw on Future Weapons on Discovery Channel a new body aror called "dragon skin" that can withstand up to AK47 rounds at close range and a grenade without any damage, I hope you get those soon. I also hope that the Iraqi security forces wake up soon so that they don't need your baby sitting anymore. Take care and stay alive. Hey Slablizard, Not bagging your message, because I think it's great to send the support. Just thought you'd be interested: The body armor that's been used since the invasion (ceramic plates under soft armor) can stop an AK round (7.62 mm like a 30-06 but shorter) at close range. One of our guys had that theory tested when he got hit in the chest and ended up fine (after some shock). That stuff is amazing. However, I've been told the plates won't stop an M16 round (5.56 mm) because they're faster and better at penetrating. Luckily they don't have many M4's or M16's over there. Also, the Iraqi Army and Police may be fairly incompetent (they can't aim for instance) and they have no background in tactics, but they helped us out quite a bit when it came to searching houses, dealing with the people, etc. Plus, their job is even more dangerous than ours; even just standing in line to get the job is deadly! I've been back for over two years, but I hear they are getting better. At any rate, they do deserve our respect. If nothing else, they deserve our sympathy: many do it for the money to feed their families, and end up getting blown up or worse. That said, they'll appreciate the message. Most of them have friends at home that say the same things to them, so it feels genuine. The truth is somewhere in the middle of course. (between Fox news and Air America perhaps) and Dr Feelgood: Beanie babies are even more fun to drive-by kids with! They stampede over that kind of thing. That and pens, for some reason. Maybe that's what the lady from FL had in mind eh?

Maybe that's what the lady from FL had in mind eh? hey David. Thanks..well the one I saw recently on that show was a compound material that could withstand multiple close range hits without penetration, here I got the link http://www.pinnaclearmor.com/...rmor/dragon-skin.php it was really amazing, they strapped a grenade under it, the front part was blown apart, but still no penetration in the back part of the armor... I have no idea where the truth is, but the moment I read your post I felt a connection, just get back in one place bro. well you're back already, so that goes to your friends still over there.

I do remember hearing about that stuff. Definitely looks like an improvement, mostly due to mobility factors. The ceramic plates are great, but they're heavy and make certain maneuvers and body positions difficult, not to mention holding in a lot of heat. Maybe by the next war that stuff will be accepted by the military, eh?

I weighed my full kit once... M16, Helmet, Body armor, and ammo and came up with 50something pounds... and that doesn't include my 38 pound aidbag. Dismounting in all of that stuff sucked ballz

Yeah, you medics have it rough with that bag. But that's payback for getting to hang out with girls in the aid station. Not to mention the fun I've heard about at Fort Sam Seriously though, you guys are awesome.

Charlie med did, but we sure didn't unless you count the one that hung out there because she hated her roommate... and fort sam is a fun place

I regularly IM with a good friend over there. While he's been gone his wife moved to finish grad school. So coming home, he'll be introduced to a whole new world. Imagine small town Wyoming kid, leaves for a year and a half, comes back and is living in Vegas. I'm dragging him up everything I can in Red Rocks to make him feel better about the move when he gets back. Only a couple months left.

For the record the SAPI plates will stop a 5.56 round. The second tour in Afghanistan our Supply Sgt. had a front plate that somehow was not on our books and we talked him into letting us do some testing with it. We took it out to a range and fired an M4 at it and it stopped it just as well as it stopped a 7.62. None of us thought that it would b/c, like you pointed out it is faster. We never really had to worry about anyone finding that missing plate b/c it is laying somewhere in the Afhganistan desert in a million pieces after being shot with my Barrett sniper rifle at 1300 yards. Doobs

Doobs does that depend on what round you're shooting, though? I thought some of the newer bullets came with platic/tungten tips??? 1300 yards. with this??? [image]http://world.guns.ru/sniper/barrett_m82a1.jpg[/image] To the OP, good luck, be safe, come back to your family!!! Brent Yes it would definitly depend on the round, we were just using 5.56 Ball ammo and it was stopped. There was a visible dent in the back of the plate but no penetration. There was no picture visible in your post but the 1300 meter (sorry about the "yard" comment, I have been playing too much golf) shot was made with the Barrett .50 cal. sniper rifle (M82A1) not the XM109. Doobs

Doobs I looked that rifle up, yeah. Looks like the cannuck that had that long shot in afganistan was using it. No worries about the yard comment. regarding the ball ammo. I'm guessing your enemies don't have access to a lot of deep penetrating or fragmenting rounds?

Yeah I had read that a sniper from the PPCLI (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry) had the longest kill with that paticular weapon. We actually did a joint operation with them towards the end of Operation Anaconda in March of '02 and I wonder if that is when it was. As far as the enemy having AP or HE round for their small caliber weapons, I really haven't heard. We found so many AK ammo cashes though that I am sure that some of it was AP. In Afghanistan they did have AP rounds for some of their DISHKA .50 cals.

I couldn't give you the date of the shot, though. The first shot, apparently, ripped right through a bag the target was carrying but he never heard/felt it. Second shot hit the mark. I don't think i have the guts to serve like you guys do/did.

We have the Big Red 1 (1st Infantry) and the Screaming Eagles (101st Airborne). The Canadians have Princess Patricia's Light Infantry. You have to be pretty confident of your manhood to serve in that unit!

I set that particular email account up to act as a counter for the number of letters.. the messages will then be transferred (without email addresses) to a site call Americasupportsyou.mil. If you would prefer to write messages directly on that site.. thats completely fine.. I was really excited to get as many as possible.. but if sending the message to a email address is the difference in you sending a message.. then post at the above site. Thank you that email account rememberthetroops@usa.com
