I am rock climber from Arkansas. Most of the ice that we get here comes in a glass. I’m thinking about a quick 5-7 day spring break trip in early March. I would love to do some ice climbing, but I’m not ready to go all out. Any advice on how I could spend a couple of days doing some tr kind of stuff with out having to buy my own gear or spend a fortune on a guide?

Well, you could rent gear and climb in Ouray at the ice park.

But you should know how to belay from above, set up anchors, etc.

The ouray idea is a good one. You haved to remember, though, that generally there is alot more that wants to kill you climbing ice than rock. It's entirely possible to figure it out on your own as long as your smart about it, but not really recommended.

If you cant find someone to take you out, think of looking into a clinic or something. Maybe talk a few of your friends into going with you. Generally it ends up being cheaper per person with more people (for clinics etc. I mean).

Good luck!

I have know ideas of figuring this out on my own. As for clinics, I have absolutly no money. What do you think the odds would be of finding someone willing to take on a shadow for a few days?

Bring a climbing partner to Ouray and get a guide thru a local climbing store and you can probably get a guide/gear rental deal and split the cost with your buddy for a day and then you can jump on someone elses rope most probably the rest of the time at a newbie climb.
OR
wait and go to one of the Climbing Festivals next year in Montana, CO or WY and get gear and clinic and beer for cheap!

setting up a toperope is easy enough. go rent boots, crampons, and tools. works you can do is stab yourself with the crampons. steer clear of swinging at the rope.

I would love to have a partner go with me, but it appears that all my climbing partners are working that week. This may have to be a solo trip.
