Virginia “Mother Duck” Ferguson passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007 from cancer; she was 66 years old. The winner of the 2003 Yosemite Fund Award that recognizes the park’s “unsung heroes,” Virginia volunteered for YA every summer for 10 years, and then went on to volunteer directly for the NPS Interpretive Division in summer 2006. During her YA tenure, she would camp in a tent for 5 months, orienting and coordinating the efforts of more than 50 month-long Yosemite Valley volunteers. She introduced legions of visitors to the wonders of Yosemite with her vast knowledge of the park and its operations, and recruited many new members to YA. Her skill and enthusiasm allowed YA to expand greatly the scope of the month-long volunteer program.

In accordance with her family’s wishes, donations made to YA in Virginia’s memory will be used to help fund NPS interpretive rangers in Yosemite.

Re printed with the kind permission of the Yosemite Association

As a climber you may not have had any direct contact with Virginia Ferguson but if you have walked on a track or sat on a bench, chances are that she has had a hand in making that possible.
