I am considering moving to Hanoi from the U.S. I am curious to know what the climbing is like in and around the area.
Questions:
1) Is there a climbing 'community' in Vietnam?
2) Is rock climbing allowed and is it safe?
3) Is there much bouldering?
I'm currently bouldering v4's-5's and want to continue with my passion while away.
Anyone have some advice/knowledge for me?

yes, there are a small climbing community in Vietnam, but not popular. Most Vietnamese don't know about climbing. My school usually has some trips for students going climbing, and some tourist company held trips like this.
Therefore, rock climbing is allowed. How safety it is would depend to who do you go with.

There is definitely some rock climbing up and down the east coast of Vietnam. I have only heard of climbing in Ha Long Bay (about 2 hour bus ride from Ha Noi), but I never made it out there. Its supposed to be wonderful. Most of the climbing is on the karsts - all limestone. I think there is some DWS as well and assume there is some bouldering but I don't know for sure.
Other areas for climbing, according to the guidebook I picked up out there are Nin Binh and Phong Nha. The Lonely Planet guide (obviously not the *ideal* rock climbing guide) doesn't say much except mention those areas.
Enjoy Ha Noi if you make it out there. Check out Restaurant Bobby Chinn (south side of Hoan Kiem Lake) if you get a chance. Great food and drinks and particularly a good place if you're feeling a little "homesick" for a western meal/almosphere. AND, Bobby is a total trip - so much fun.

I was in Vietnam for 6 months, I tried to create an online guidebook.

There isn t a real community of climbers. Some French climb and open some routes, but it s very confidential.
About bouldering, the best place I found is near Nha Trang, at Dam Mon and around the Whale Island. Take your cras pad.
There is about 60 bolted routes, most of them are in Halong Bay (take your GPS), and hard: mot of them above 5.11b.
Deep water soloing is possible.

My friend Onslo and I are two Americans living in Vietnam, Ha Long Bay developing climbing and a guiding service. If you come out here feel free to email me. I have good beta on the new areas. All the known routes have old bolts and are very questionable. Some very sketchy.
Hopefully as we develop more climbing the scene will grow too!
