Winter crags WV/NC

So next week is my February break from college..I think I should put down the glass of wine and actually climb something. I'm thinking of hitting the New and North Carolina. I'm a pebble wrestler at heart..probably spend some time in Boone.. but trad/sport cragging is good too. What are some good winter crags? Obscure areas are a plus, I hate crowds.
Thanks for any input!

Weeeelllll... the new probably isn't your best bet for Feb cragging. If it isn't snowing, it's likely to be raining or dripping melted snow. We just emerged from our little weekend blizzard this morning, so even though today looks nice, there probably won't be much dry for a few days.

NC is your best bet. That or Tennessee. Ditto the Rumbling bald suggestion. And if it's warm enough, Shortoff.

If it is not cloudy in boone, then ship rock is a good place to start for trad. If you are looking for MP, Lynville Gorge/Table Rock are good cantidates as well, but beware the access road to Table Rock might be closed this time of year so if I were you I would check to make sure its open. If not you are in for a long hike in. Have fun on your trip!

didn't feel like creating a new post to ask this so i'm just using this one. any of you NRG locals know whether any of the south facing or over hanging walls will be good for this weekend the 2/24,25? I see it's suppossed to be warm and "sunny" all week long...The Meadows? Endless? anywhere in summersville? please say yes, i'm sick of gym climbing

Endless is south facing for the most part. That would probably be your best bet. Beauty Mountain is also a crag to consider. Let it dry out a couple of days though because as j_ung has said, we have just emerged from a weekend winter wonderland! I would guess that by thursday or friday it should be overall dry.

I think the Meadow might be your best bet. Weather report as of now calls for even odds of rain both days.

if you are looking to come to Boone, you picked a good time because it looks like next week will be pretty warm. In Boone/Linville you should go bouldering at Grandmother, Lost Cove and Blowing Rock Boulders.
