So the SLO-Op's vacuum broke and I went and bought a mid-range one to replace it, but it pretty much just spews dust into the air.

What do you commercial gym folks have to suck up the chalk?

I bought a rebuilt Kirby Vacuum on-line. OK this is sad, but I sold Kirby's one summer in college, but they are bomber. We have gravel in our gym, so it ends up every where thus destroying vacuums. In one year we went through 4 vacuums. I bought the Kirby the next year and I have used it every day for the past five years. Expensive but bomber.

I'd be stoked to see a roomba parked in the corner of the gym. Not sure how it'd handle, but might be worth a shot.

Nine years ago this month we bought a commercial vac called "The Pig" from Waxie Sanitary Supply for the Phoenix Rock Gym. We have been using it ever since with no service or repairs. It was $1000 back in 1998. My theory on tools has always been "buy the best". It will save you money and frustration in the long run.

Awesome, thanks Dief.

Roombas are cute, but they don't have that much power.

I recently took over the management position in a climbing gym in the Bay Area. The old manager bought a backpack vacuum for the gym.

All I can say is don't get a backpack vacuum. It lacks the power of a traditional vacuum and doesn't always get all the chalk and dirt up off carpet. You end up having to run over the same spot multiple times, and vacuuming ends up taking more time than it should.
