What are some of people's favorite climbing communities they have lived amongst or encountered?

the dutch www.climbing.nl is standard since i am dutch the german climbing portal on www.climbing.de was just hilarious a few years ago. No i rarely come there. The belgian www.belclimb.net is very good cos i climb there a lot (belgium that is) www.climbing.lu is nice cos i know the people over there. www.boldering.com was one of the best ever a few years ago. Met a lot of people over the forum in a lot of countries. somehow it from one moment to another is was not interesting anymore and i stayed away. I don't think they missed me. There are more, but not so interesting to mention them over here. And of course the rc.com here is good! (Since they stopped with bannig anyone who even thought a bad word) nice community here, and a nice euro-subforum.

i thought this was a question about real-life communities, petje, you're too virtually screwed don't know what you mean by community either now that i think about it. I liked the one i used to have in Boston area - based on rc Mass thread mainly and gym-going rats. Also the fact of a big student city helped. Here in Belgium it sucks more - less people willing to drive on w-ends to far-away places, smaller gyms and more closed-end communities...The fact of living in a 5000 person village doesn't exactly help...Just my ramblilngs...

The 10-14 days I spent in Maple Canyon (UT) were nice. And so much more exciting than the mormon villages around and their turkeys!

okay, real life is another way to look at communities. In that sense i think a like the peeps in Belgium, although it's not that much of a community. more good peeps i know individually. i learned to climb on plastic in the Netherlands and had my share of a LOT of competition climbing in the 90's. It was a love/hate relationship for me with those people. Individual i still have some contact wiht some of them from that timeperio, and really nice ones, but i didn't like the 'community' in general. I think they didn't understood me. But once i got to know the people in germany, mainly around the cologne area and in the palatinum, i found a really nice group! some really became friends! And once in a while i meet up with the trier/luxembourg posse, and they are really cool! still one of the best memories in the line of the question asked were the boldering.com euromeetings. good memories. it died, but sometimes that is the best way. Keep the good memories and move on.

I don't know about community, but the I am partial to the people I have met in Squamish and HP40. I hope to expand on the list on my road trip in two months.

There's nothing around me. There's a couple in 45min - 1.5hour drives away. I miss living in Nova Scotia. Everyone was great around there. What a great area to start climbing at. Still frequesnt their message boards: www.climbeasterncanada.com

I generally don't like Albuquerque, but the people I've met at the Stone Age gym here have really been very friendly and welcoming. Great gym if you're into that sort of thing and a good place to find partners for outdoors.

Where ever the rock is steep and high, where there is a campfire and friends to enjoy it with. Cities are designed to take your money ... beware of these demons.

There were many different aspects of the community in Lander that sure stick out in my mind. Between the above average looks of their teenage girls (I was a teenager myself at the time) and the climbing community it was an all around good experience.

The best one that I have experienced was in Japan. Where I was at we all shared everything and looked forward to seeing everyone else at the crag on the weekends. My mid-week sessions weren't bad either. I always came prepared to rope solo and usually I'd hook up with another person who was intent on doing the same. In the US I'd say that it's a toss up between San Diego and Reno/Tahoe. Both have great people, and predictable weather. I appreciate the fact that you can become good at all of the sport's aspects from rock to alpine to ski mountaineering. I grew up there so I have a bias towards it. Where I'm at now is alright. My community here consists of 7 of us and we do what we can with what we have.

Lotsa of cool folks down there at the NRG. They're even nice to us strange Pennsylvania people for some reason. A sub-community to the NRG group would be all the non-locals that camp at Roger's, haven't met any there that I didn't get along with.
