I was just offered a teaching job at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale. I don't know very much about the area. It seems like it's 3 hours from a number of great climbing areas, but I'm not sure about climbing closer than that. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Sarah

Hey Sarah Within close proximity to Carbondale you have access to Independence Pass, which offers sport and trad climbing at an unusual altitude with moderate approaches. On the oher side, north of carbondale, is Rifle Mountain Park which has hundreds of sport climbs mainly in the 5.11 to 5.14 range. Both Rifle and Independence are about an hour from Carbondale. Even closer is No-Name Canyon, and the Peuox in Glenwood Springs, which is only about a 10 minute drive from Carbondale. If you are willing to venture further, the Grand Junction Area offers the Colorad NationalMonument with a great deal of sandstone trad climbing, and there is also Unawep canyon which has more bouldersthen one could ever ask for as well as several great sport/trad multipitch crags. Now, venturing alittle further (3 hours) you have Moab, UT on one side, and East of Carbondale (on I-70) you now have hit the front range with areas such as shelf road (sport), Boulder Canyon (sport/trad), Rocky Mounain National Park (alpine/trad), Eldorado Canyon (Trad), and the Flatirons (trad). Shelf road is very similar to Rifle except with longer appoaches and more climbs in the 5.10 range. If you have any questions or if I can shoot you over any beta, drop me a PM. Hope his helps! -rockrat_co-
