Nut Tool Holder Anyone?

A couple of my partners were descending Redgarden Wall in Eldo after completing a multi-pitch climb. They both (at different times) caught their nut tool in the loop of one of their climbing shoes and came dangerously close to pitching off the trail.

Both of them have since cut the loops off their shoes. I happen to like my loops; have grown quite attached to them in fact and find them useful.

Does anyone have a solution? Or a creative way of storing the nut tool out of the way during the downclimb?

I dunno, clip the nut tool directly to the harness as opposed to using a long sling? Cutting off the loops on their shoes seems a little drastic for such an easy solution. And now getting the shoes on is gonna be harder.

Oh man, I've done that on route, I'm glad/sad to hear I'm not the only person that's happened to, you'd think the odds of it happening would be really bad.

The best thing I've seen was a second who was climbing with a camelback hydration pack. They have those little plastic loop things on the shoulder pads, so with an arms length of sling, attach a nut tool, tie it to the loop, then clip it with a tiny toy carabiner to the plastic clip. Its out of the way, and only takes an extra second to get out. I don't use a pack like that, so i use a longer sling, but do the same thing from my harness.

I have always toyed with the idea of getting one of those retractable cords that companies use for ID and pass-cards, the kind that clips to your shirt. The card is attached by a spring-loaded tether and allows you to swipe it, then it retracts. I always though this would be a good answer to the nut-tool problem. Instead of having it hanging on your harness, which is sometimes a pain to find when you need it, and it can get caught on your shoes. A spring loaded tether would make it very accessible and keep it out of the way when you dont need it. Maybe clip it to the front of your shirt, or a sternum strap.

I have this nut tool and simply re-clip it to my harness after each use. Even with a tether, I find I need to re-clip it to my harness or gear sling after each use to avoid potential problems of it hanging free.

Instead of cutting your loops off completely, just cut them so they are no longer a loop.

The retractable ID holder thing is a good idea. Or maybe a beefier one built for keys?

I've been using an all metal version of a retractable badge holder for years. Wire instead of a nylon line.

I have no idea why anyone would use anything else. Bought it from my local gear pusher.

Wow, retractrable badge holders, extensive knot wraps, cutting up your shoes.

Anyone here ever heard of a pocket? They aren't just fingerholds ya'know, they are also these nice bag things on your clothing if you spend the big bucks. Look into it ..... seriously.

Lots of great suggestions. Thanks!

I was envisioning something like a holster or pocket protector. Thoughts? Comments?

Yes if you now up with a nut tool in your scabbard people will laugh at you.

But you could whip it out... HA SAH! And chop those nuts right outta da wall, like Samauri sushi chef!

I just put it down my pants, perferably down the back, cause then if it does get caught on something then it makes me happy.

I use a retracting keyring with a coated metal wire. It clips onto my chalkbag belt, and I have a simple back-up using one of my wife's hair elastics. While leading, I have it rotated back by my chalkbag. I adjust it forward a bit while seconding, and never have to worry about fumbling my tool or it getting in the way.

I wouldn't want to have my tool tethered to the front of my shirt. I can see it really getting in the way.

Sorry, I don't know the make or model. I believe I bought it from Home Depot. I was primarily concerned with easily backing it up and getting one with sufficient reach. I'd suggest just going to the store and checking out a couple models.

when i'm cleaning i sometimes leave it clipped to the rope above my tie in knot. I have it wrapped with some 3mm cord but generally don't undo it.

I think it's weird the OP's friends were hiking off in their climbing shoes..If I hike off i'm either in approach shoes/sandals or barefoot. sure as hell not going to kill my climbing shoes.
i see people walking around in their shoes.. clearly not getting ready or just after a climb and wonder why folks like to destroy the soles like that.

I use this one:

I don't even bother with a keeper cord anymore ( what a PITA that was ) if I need to I either clip it to the rope or a sling, just to make sure I don't drop it.

i found it east just to use elastic streachy chord and attach it to the back of my harness

the nut tool dangles about 6 inches off my harness but will streach about 4 feet. it's really handy and never getts in the way (plus you never have to unclip it so you will never drop it!Wink)
