Anybody got any experience in flying overseas with aid gear? eg Portaledge, haulbags and aid rack? Flying from Europe to SF (Yosemite) this summer and was told I can get 2 checked bags (each 23kgs)! Issue is, my portaledge doesn't fit into any other bag apart from its own haul bag! Hence my qorry is it might get damaged (specially the tubing/joints etc) if I just check it in! I was thinking of padding it, with cloths, and or other soft goods, to protect it more. Also whole aid rack won't be able to be carried on! hence again, need to somehow pack it into bags! Probably haul bags and then some kinda of duffel? any ideas, suggestions, tips much appreciated! cheers Dirtbagger

theres some big ass bags out there I'm guessing it'll fit in along with clothes and other items. I have a few of Outdoor Products duffels and one is about 4ft long. You may end up getting hit with a over size fee but will be worth it to get it there safely. Another option could be to mail it if you know someone in teh States

OK I haven't flown with one, but my friend bought one off of the Internet and we picked it up from the airport. It was all in the original bag which was then wrapped in bubble-wrap and duct tape. All this was neatly slide into a cardboard box that it fit into perfectly. The box was from florescent light tubes and was pre-printed with "GLASS HANDLE WITH CARE" all over it in big red letters. I'm not sure if this contributed to it arriving in perfect condition or not, but I thought the florescent tube box was fairly clever.
