First off, here are some shots of the old wall: Now, here is the new section (grey areas are the new construction): I built the addition mainly to expand the roof crack, which now runs at 24 feet:

What is the material composition of the crack structure. It looks like you have sort of texture material over top of wood but more comfortable than any other boulder wall crack I have seen (the rounded areas look especially fun). cheers, j.

The older section -- walls and the cracks -- is covered with a concrete product. It looks cool, but you have to put it on really thick to work well. First time I used fiberglass reinforced concrete with acrylic fortifier, and sprayed it on in multiple layers. I got maybe four years out of that. I chipped off the old sections last year, and troweled on thicker layers that were a mix of fiberglass concrete, mortar, and fortifier. Some of that has stayed on really well, and I've got other bits that are coming off already. I have sections with and without hardware cloth attached to the wood panels. For me, the wire mesh hasn't made much of a difference, even though it is well-secured to the wood. The newer sections are covered with three layers of deck paint, mixed with both non-skid additives and sand, all on top of a base sealer. Deep texture roller for application. Most of the rounded edges and flares were cut with a sawzall, then gone over with a belt sander to smooth them out. With a powerful sander and ultra-coarse belts, you can shape the wood pretty easily.

I built the addition over a two month period. It's hard to say how many hours it took -- some weeks I got to work on it a lot, other weeks I didn't touch it at all.

Fabulous home cave! I can't help but wonder what might go through the minds of archaeologists in the distant future when they uncover this in a dig. Kathy

It's taken awhile, but there are now 42 problems in the cave -- the shortest is 4 or 5 moves, and the longest is 17 or 18 moves. Just over 300 holds on the wall at present.
