Has anyone tried to put a wall bag (like a fish bag or beef bag) on your tag rack while soloing? I'm thinking of doing this so the big cams and such don't get caught on stuff. Plus it limits the damage to your gear while sliding up a wall. Any thoughts? Zac

Hey ZacK: I did this with a metolius bag on one wall. I found that the rock wore through the material almost instantly, within the first few pitches. If I just had to bag the tag rack, I;d use one of the small metolius mini-haul bags. However, I don't bag anymore if I tag. The cams don't get stuck, and if they do I can just rattle them around and they come loose. However, the lip of a bag (like a beef/rope bag) gets pretty darn stuck. This is why if I wanted to save my gear/jacket/water/whatever, I'd use metolius. They actually haul OK, are burly, and have a fold-over top that is less likely to catch on stuff. -Kate.

slight thread drift... I was looking for how you arrange your tag rack "the better way" in some old PTPP posts and the links to his photos that would have shown me were broken. I am curious if there is more to a tag rack than a runner with a bunch of gear clipped to it. Specifically in reference to the "continuous loop" system... Obviously, you need to rig the fifi so that if will release when you pull the slack up on the tag end of your lead rope. Does anyone use a double rope bag like what fish sells, with both the haul line and the extra lead rope hanging from the tag rack, instead of the haul line feeding up to the tag rack and then the tag end of the lead line feeding up to the climber? Anyway, I'm sure I could figure most of this out by trial and error, but I kindof wanted to see some pics or diagrams... Thanks John

you need a seperate bag on your tag rack or it gets a bit messy when you leave your tag rack on a piece after using it.

I've used the (BD) Speed Bag for such things, though not nearly as many pitches as kate has. prior to that I just used an old folding chair stuff-sack that I was not too particularly attached to. before that I used a simple nylon stuff-sack that I had lying about the gear room, though it didn't last too long. good enough for some multi-pitch stuff here in the Wasatch, but I wouldn't expect it to make it up even one/half a route on el cap.
