I've done the search. Petzl is the Camalot of ascenders, but I am wondering if there is any substantive difference between the locking and opening mechanisms of any ofd the similar style ascenders. Also I may be able to get ABC's or Jumars cheaper. Has anyone tried the new Jumar Alpine ascenders or the ABC ascenders?

sure, you can get a lot of things cheaper. the real question is, why would you want to? people forget that you get what you pay for. if you gotta get it cheap, buy a pair off ebay. most of those are sold by people who realize that they didn't really need to spend the coin on a pair of ascenders for a single use, then have them sitting in the closet gathering dust and taking up space. not everyone can afford to be a gear whore =)

I mostly do solo-aiding, and have used several styles of ascenders. Ultimately my pick was the Petzl ascenders, others were lighter, heavier, bulkier, harder to get on the rope, didn't work as well on traverses, funkier to rig for hauls. Overall I think they were the best. Not to contradict other climbers, but I would never buy anything off ebay. Unless I feel assured the piece has been treated properly (i.e. not dropped, stored improperly) it wouldn't be the place to buy from. /resurrection

I like the large ultrascenders. There much like a regular Jumar style ascender, beefy, large enough to work well with gloves. Two clip in spots on the bottom. Strong spring keeps cam engaged and on the line. They take a licking and...........well, you know. http://www.cmi-gear.com/.../ascenders/large.asp
