Anyone ever checked a Crash Pad as luggage on a plane trip?

I've done it twice (American Airlines and Southwest Airlines). Both times without incident.

Technically, I think they could charge you for oversize luggage b/c of the dimentions. But in my experience, perhaps b/c pads are so lightweight, they have never batted an eye.

I would use the curbside checkin and throw them a tip. That way they won't want to charge you extra and risk losing the tip. Just keep the tip less than what the extra baggae fee would be or it doesnt work out.Wink

I have done it a couple of times and they haven't even measured the pads to see if they were oversized (one was).

I've done it three times.

The first time, with Alaska in Seattle and Reno, they didn't say anything.

The second time, with Alaska in Seattle and Reno, they told me that it was too big but when I showed them how light it was they let me take it no prob.

The third time, with Delta from Salt Lake they told me that it was too big and I had to pay $100 US to check it. I told them it was athletic, like skis and stuff, which are normally oversized no charge. They told me because the perimeter was greater than 50 inches I had to pay. I asked to speak to the manager but she wouldn't come to see me. The agent wouldn't bend, so I paid and I will never fly Delta again even as a connector.

Was your pad a "standard" sized pad or was it oversized at all? You story is the sort of thing I was always afraid of because there isn't much you can do with the thing if they won't let you check it without paying.

i have done it two or three times without incident. They never said anything about it being too big. My giant backpack is mcuh more difficult to deal with so maybe they're distracted

I was about the say the same thing...

When we went to JT last year, we had a large backpacking pack, a couple of XL duffels, and my pad. They didn't bat an eye, except maybe that the pack was right on the weight limit.

Yep this is a no go on the big Metolious pad: doesn't compress well because the two foam densites are seamed together and it is one long piece. I have the "Behemoth" and there is no way that sucka is gonna make it in a duffle.

I flew United a couple of months ago with a monster multi-day pack and my crashpad, both checked. I didn't run into any problems getting the thing checked, one bit of weirdness at Denver worth mentioning though: when I hit the baggage claim to grab my luggage the crash pad didn't come out on the normal carosel or the oversized carosel, so I ended up spending a half an hour doing laps around baggage claim before finally noticing it had be set out to one side of baggage claim along one wall. No idea how it got there.

I checked mine on Iceland Air twice with no problems. They didn't charge me or anything.

I have, with a full backpack stuffed into the middle. It works just fine, they may ask you to tape the straps down. You may want to do it on your own anyway so it doesnt get mangled.

Make sure you have your transportation to and from the airport taken into account. Traveling on the subway or in a cab is not always easy when you are lugging a large pad through turnstyles and in trunks.

i dont think this has been mentioned yet, but has anyone tried checking one of the larger pads. For instance, i have a triple mad pad which is quite a bit larger than a regular pad, so i would think that my pad would classify as oversized...
