I work for a local Municipality and yesterday we had an open house so it include tours of our City hall and rides and stuff for the kiddies. Well they brought in an inflatable climbing wall. I've never seen on of these before and I was wondering are they safe structurally? Even the holds are inflatable... how weird is that. I won't even go on about the 30 second belay course they give so the "renters" of the wall can belay.

I thoght the holds were filled with sand or something. Eather way I think this kind of crap is getting real stupid. People say "oh yea I have rockclimbed", when they just climb the stupid walls and crap and think they are a bad... .

Thats so stupid. Like there was this thing on one the nick channels I get about rockclimbing. In the begining it said something aout Chris Sharma. But then it had a defetion on belay, and it showed a person using a GriGri to belay and Tara Lipiski attempting to rockclimb. Ha, ha. Thats an other story. And then little boy like I can climb pretty hard, I keep redoing a route till I get to top and it gets easy everytime. I'm like dur, it's supposed you little trying to be Chris Sharma 7 year - old.

Whhaaaa? Never heard of such a contraption. I'm not sure about the safety but I agree with you, I wouldn't go near it. How tall was it?

Give me a Break. These inflatables have been used for over 10 years now. Are you that Full of yourself as a climber to feel the need to bash these devices. Anything, Anything that helps the public Identify with our sport is helpful to the recognition of our sanctuaries on the Real Stone. Quit being hard asses.. JBone

I once climbed on one of those things...my high school rented one of them for the post-prom party in our field house. It was quite the interesting climb, having the wall itself move and contort under your own weight . The holds were little pouches of something...I don't think it was sand, maybe just really stiff foam, and of course when you grab them the wall around the hold twists so the hold bends outward, making grabbing the things a little bit of a trick. I wouldn't want to try one again, but it was nonetheless interesting. [ This Message was edited by: brianthew on 2002-09-22 08:52 ]

I agree jbone. Just because someone can lead a 5.12 doesn't give them the right to critisize someone who has only climbed these so called inflatable walls. So maybe it's not a real rock- give them a break.

it's one thing to identify with our "sanctuaries" its totally different to attract little grommets who think their bad to our "sanctuaries" to clog it up with silliness and ignorant inexperience (inexperience in itself is not bad, it just the cockiness that goes along with grommets) -bob

I myself have climbed on these things. Boy am I a sucker. I waited in line for 2 hours and climbed it in 5 seconds probably 20 feet high. It was akward climbing. Like stated above the holds were made out of some stiff foam and the wall did bend. belay what?

I worked one of those things for a day (money is money) and it looked like the stupidest thing I've ever seen in my life.... ... until I tried it!!!!!! No, wait, I didn't try it. They're ridiculous and have nothing to do with climbing, just silly carnival games.

We had one of these walls at UCF (The University of Central Florida) for some phone promo. deal or something. I walked past it with a snug smile on my face and didn't even try it. About an hour later I heard that someone had fallen off of the top of the wall and "bounced" down. It was a reminder that even though these things are kiddie anything with hights is still dangerous. I have no doubt that the person fell because of bad belaying/supervision. (By the way the person fell aprox. 35', but was ok.)
