For me Climbing...more rock less mountain. What do you like best "Climbing" or "Rock and Ice"? and why?

R&I, the guides in that mag seem to have better staying power. Although I'm trying to track down an article Jeff Achey wrote about aid routes on Table Rock, SC. Apparently Whitney at Black Dome knows all that stuff anyways so, big deal. But I would like to see the pictures so I can get an idea of whether I'd be able to hack it. Anyways, my stack of Rock and Ice keeps growing, whereas I always seem to toss out Climbing. Maybe I'm just a jackass...

I like Rock & Ice better. I have a subscription to Climbing, but I don't like it as well and I buy R&I when I see it in the stands. I don't plan on renewing my Climbing and I plan on subscribing to R&I next.

I just look at the pictures in both of them while I'm in the store. Most of the news items are a month or two old and I've already heard about it online, and it's hard to keep coming up with fresh articles so they end up recycling the same ideas. I like the purdy pictures though

This question AGAIN!!! I subscibe to R&I and Gripped. A good book is better though and I am currently reading Paul Pritchards "The Totem Pole....", more intense than most magazine articles.

Yeah a good book is better... Im reading 'Expeditions' by Andrew Lindblade at the momment. Climbing and Rock and ice is too pricey here in OZ.

I prefer Climbing because it is the same price as Rock and Ice and climbing has more content and still has lots of good pictures. Trob

Gripped is awesome. Love the design and content. I tend to fall toward Rock and Ice. Seems less conservative than Climbing. But, in the end, I read them both. vBouldering too.

They both put out the same articles and features. Sometimes one does a better job then the other. It's a give or take deal.

Prefer Rock and Ice. More beta and less ads. I don't care for that Master Beta guy in Climbing magazine. Seems like a pompous a**hole to me. Kathy

The question may soon be moot. This is from rec.climbing: Rock and Ice magazine based in Boulder, Colorado has been sold. For the last five years Dougald MacDonald has been at helm of this increasingly glossy and successful climbing magazine. MacDonald and a group of investors bought the magazine off George Bracksiack, the magazines founder. The buyers? None other than Duane Raleigh, the publisher and Quent Williams the production manager of the Carbondale (Colorado) based Climbing magazine. Both Raleigh and Williams recently resigned from Climbing magazine. The new Rock and Ice magazine will be based in Carbondale, opposite the offices of Climbing magazine and it looks like there will be an exodus of Climbing magazine staff across the road to join their old boss, Duanne Raleigh . The first defection was Tyler Stableford, Climbing's photo-editor who will now be the editor at Rock and Ice. Unfortunately most of the staff at the old Rock and Ice are now unemployed, and the future of Climbing magazine, once owned by climber Michael Kennedy but now owned by the media-giant PrimeMedia is assured, but a little murky. I love both of them. They both have unique qualities about them. I get Climbing mag, but I wouldnt mind rock&ice too. They are damn expensive for mags, so i only get 1. They are great when your off the rock and crave something from the sport.

Bumping this thread to the top since there are so many threads refering to it... locked the other ones and making this one visible. Please feel free to read the replies in the other threads, though. [ This Message was edited by: polarwid on 2002-09-20 18:34 ]
