See the ratings for these 3 pics, and guess who is bombing me down (and up by the way)?!
Frankly, I've been submitting pics for 4 yrs here now, and I know which pics are excellent, which pics are good, which pics are correct, and which pics are bad. I often know myself what a pic lacks, I usually know it before I take it (the light, the colours, the shapes...), and when I submit a pic, I know it has an interest and I know it shows some quality.
Of course, I could PM this user and ask him why I did that, but as a Mod, I don't want to appear like a big brother or a nazi Mod.
So tell me if you think these 3 pics deserve a 1 or a 5, and vote for them to counter balance these extreme votes.

if i understand your question correctly i'll say this: albeit spectacular scenary and beautiful mountains i don't see quaility in any of the photos. looks like something i'd take with my pocket digi. i'd say 2-3 *'s not 3.5 - 4 *'s ( IMH-nonphotographic-O )

Ehh...I think they all deserve about a 3 or 3.5. Maybe the shaded North Face pic could be a 4 with only a little better lighting. None of them are really spectacular photographs...more or less a plain old photo of a mountain. I give you credit for actually taking them though, I don't have anything nearly as exciting to climb and take pictures of.

That's exactly what they were taken with : a digital P&S! But a 3 is not a 1. I often vote pics 3 and many of my pics are voted 3 and I don't get offended with that.

I don't find anything interesting in these shots. The light is harsh mid-day light and the formations have been shot by every tourist in the area. Find new lighting or new angles and you will have some winners.

It was late afternoon, but you are right, the pics were taken from one of the most touritic french areas : the Aiguille du Midi platform (which closes on 5 PM). I could have slept on the glacier, but I'm just a sportclimber and skier!

I looked at most of the pics in your profile and can't see what it is that your complaining about. Their good some are VG but I fail to see where you got bombed. All the ratings seem to be fair.
Maybe the pics just need to be played with:
This is now a 5 x 3 aspect

There was only 2 votes when I made the OP. The thread makes less sesne now, especially as voted are logged real time (they were recorded but only displayed overnight on the old site). I could have cut it as you did, though I wanted to keep the P&S proportions. But what you did adds more strength to the shot and put the summit out of the center (I didn't like it centered and don't even know why I centered the Drus when I took the pic).

Yikes I didn't know you could check out peoples ratings!
I wished I wouldn't have giving you a 1. I also wished I didn't rate every chick a 5. My bad! I hope I didn't wreck your chance at winning a 3rd grade photo contest!
Instead of numbers maybe we should be able to give you stickers.

C'mon Thom, you've been a mod/ed type around here for a long time. You should know better than to start these kinds of threads. They always come off as whiny and they never resolve anything.
I have only voted a few times since the new 5-star system was put into place. With the 5-star versus 10 "star" rating in place now, and the fact that the photos get rotated off the front page even less regularly than before, the photo voting has become even more meaningless.

Strangely, when I started to write the OP, it was more to show that some users are shamelessly bombing others, not to complain about my own misfortune. Then, while typing, I started to get upset (we all have an ego). And even if some other users gave me low ratings since I've started this thread, they at least said why.
But I agree it doesn't solve anything (it lightened my heart a little bit). Please someone quote my OP before I delete it!

I think I might be seeing the whole system a bit differently than you. Here is my breakdown:
5=100% (catalogue, mag. photo annual, advert.)
4=90% (tradeshow graphic, monthly mag. gallery)
3=80% (mag. spot photo, website)
2=70% (local shop advert)
1=50% (show your friends and family)
anything below 50% should not even be submitted.
This is how I try to break down my work to decide where to send it.
I sometimes vote 5 on really bad photos to embarrass the photographer.

So your vote on my pics is not inaccurate as I showed them to my friends and parents (who enjoy it)! I think you are a bit harsh, but why not afterall, as your system is consistent. Knowing it makes me accept it. I so hope than I can get one 3-star pic or two in a near future (well, hoping is not enough, I will try to improve the quality of my pics).

Maybe RC should tell us what the stars mean, that way we won't hurt each others feelings when we vote their photos 1 star. BTW, I would have voted about a 3 star for you photos. I don't see any reason to have 1-5 stars if 1 is not crap and 5 is not brilliant. GrayGhosts rating system is messed up, IMHO!
