The talent looks like he is wearing surgical gloves. 
I take it that the talent is seconding judging by the orange/red rope on his right. A pic of a climber on second is always marked down.
At first my eye is drawn to his pasty white hand which by the way is blurry, that is a minus. Then I go for the face. Great facial expression so that is a plus. Nice touch with all the chalk on his flexible helmet ;)).

He's actually on self-belay. I was just standing on the edge. I see what you mean about the surgical gloves, lol.
I really went with too little DOF, and I would have loved to see the hand in more focus. I have some other shots that are very low on DOF. The lens was a 50mm 1.4f and I had it WIDE open!

It would have been better with the focus on the hand.
The face's not interresting enough to be the prime point, because we don't see enough nor enough of the body position. Also the hand is at a force point (1/3rds).
Whay I say would've made this a very simple composition to look at... topping out.
My 2cents.

Here's another shot I took a move or two before the top out with the focus on the hand. I think that the DOF is too tight on this shot, I'd like to see more of the face here.

Nah, I actually like it like that, also with the strong contrast.
We tend to always be over-critical of our own pics to the point we think they all suck. At least I do... 
Work the contrast of the fingers a lil' and call it a day.

self editing is one thing the many people don't do enough of. the other side of the coin is editing out good pics because we only think we suck as photographers.
DING!DING!DING!
the second pic is a winner
i don't care what you think about it, it's pretty darn good. the shallow DOF makes the subject appear in a much more desperate situation than he actually may be experiencing, thereby adding a significant amount of human interest in the photo.
