New BD double portaledge vs Metolius Bombshelter

I'm finally planning on getting rid of my old getto single portaledge with the plastic buckles and get a good double. I've used the Metolius double bombshelter and thought it was easy to set up and seemed plenty bomber, but the new BD portledges look nice. I was wondering if anybody has experience with both and what one they thought was easier to set up and what one has the best fly and is the most durable.

in short, i would choose the BD hands down for more reasons that i feel the need to type. i believe it to be superior in everything from durability to functionality to size. i think the only downside of the rig is weight, and honestly i just don't care about it on this particular item.

Its one of the oldest designs out there, what with it being made by A5 and all. Look for reviews on that and you're bound to find loads of good reviews.

I think Kate wrote a review of these having feild tested both. ...something to the effect of the BD being as big as a football feild? Search somewhat recent topics for this.

I just got a single BD and it is super easy to set up and huge. I'm 6'3" so I need big. I had the old BD and loved how easy it was to set up (by far the easiest ledge to set up) but it was too small. I know the single BD is easier than the Bomb Shelter to set up but I'm not sure about the double (i have no desire to sleep with someone on a double). With all that said the BD is heavier. But if you find Kate's review it was great. Oh I would have got the Fish it was bigger...

Hope this helped

Huh. i thought every aid climber fantasized about that at some point.

i must have been mistaken about the "every", but I'd guess you'd be the exception that proves the rule.Sly

I didn't know she wrote an official review. There are a few unofficial comments on this board somewhere IIRC.

A5- originally a Jon Middendorf company, begun out of his garage

A5- now a North Face company

A5 Ledges - licensed to Conrad Anker's Anker Climbing Equipment (ACE)

A5 ledge design (perhaps just a license, not sure there) purchased by Black Diamond

There's your A5 ledge history in a nutshell.

I like it. I hate fitting ledge corners. you can't flag it though...

Didn't climbing mag ask Pass the Pitons Pete to do a review of portaledges a while ago?

He got free copies of both the Metolius and the BD for review.

I don't know what the upshot was, maybe someone will find the info and post it here.

Interestingly enough, he personally use to use a Fish ledge on all those El Cap routes.

What was your question again?

I have a Bomb Shelter and like it well enough. Haven't used the BD. But on rain fly issues alone I wouldn't get another Metolius, based only on appearances, but if you're going to use the Fly I'd much rather be in the BD. Metolius Fly pretty much sucks.
