At "Crater" Rock there is an area I want to dig up. It's basicly a glacier rock sitting by a bunch of houses. It used to have a crater around it formed by buffalos rubbing against it over sevral hundred years. However, the city filled in some 4 feet of it (including a sweet roof) when they landscaped. would it be a good idea to "dig" the rock up?

I think we should dig it up, but I think we'd need more than 3 people. If anyone is interested in digging up this boulder with us, PM me or reply to this post! I think itd be wicked cool if we could get another 4 feet added to this boulder and make up a bunch of new problems.

Craefull guys. You may stir up a nest of hornets that you may not anticipate.
I highly recommend talking to the city agency that manages that area before any action.
They may just give you the green light, but then again if you just do it, they may shut down climbing there entirely

Dear City of Calgary:
I am one of the many rock climbers who climb on a rock known as Crater Rock, which it located in Panorama Hills, close to the Silver City movies theater.
The rock its self used to be used by buffalo to rub against, over the years the buffalo worn down a Crater around the rock, thus the name ?Crater rock?. Before the houses were there, there used to be another four feet of rock to climb. This does not sound like a lot, but for a climber this is tons more potential. After landscaping, the crater was filled in. I would like to propose that the rock be returned to its original state. With your permission, we would gladly take out shovels and dig ourselves.

Just be careful, I new a girl who's dad was landscaping around a boulder, and the whole thing just rolled without warning. She found him crushed later that afternoon.

I wonder if the overhang was created by the buffalo. Would that be considered a chipped hold/problem???

I work for a city. There are procedures that cities go by. Permits to excavate are typically required. To get that permit, you most likely will need to be the owner of the property the boulder sits on. Also, the state of California passed a law (and I assume the others may have the same law) that an agency (DIG ALERT in CA) needs to be contacted 24 hours prior to excavation. Finally, you mentioned the buffalo. The site may be protected, historcally. Be careful, fine can be quite steep (steeper the the climb its self).
