Hey, next year in the spring I am planning a 3 week or so trip up there for alpine, not looking for a snow slog but rock and ice. I have been looking at Kings peak in the Yukon. Can anyone give me any ideas or suggestions, as well this will be my frist time north of Cold lake so I am not sure if flying is cheaper or driving, this trip is still in the plannning phase. Thanks

I don't know if driving cheap, but having done both, driving is far more interesting.

I have been suggested to drive just for the convience of your gear compared to flying but I dont want to spend an extra day or two driving if it isnt worth it

The slower you go, the more you'll see. Given that, crawling would probably be best. In all seriousness, if you want to really understand the orientation of a place, it helps not to just drop into it. I hate the "time travel" aspect of flying anywhere. The fact is that with modern jet travel you can be almost anywhere in the world that has an airport in ONE day. I find that disorienting. Don't get me wrong, I fly. But I prefer to go slower if I can. Best, Kim

I might drive up because I love my truck but I will still look at prices and time wise, I understand about stoping to smell the rose's but in my occupation I put on about 70 000 km a year and the only 'big rig' that I drive is a rig not a truck, as well working all across Alberta and BC has given me oppurtunity to see quite a bit. Now when I want to go climbing I just want to go climbing, but where ever we go chances are we are going to fly into a loc as well. Have you found a big price diffrence and how long did it take you to drive? How about climbing or logistics?

I'd recommend drive. The drive is worth it and with airfare at about $400- $800 return from Vancouver, Edmonton or Calgary its actually cheaper. It takes about 2 - 3 easy-ish days to get to Whitehorse from the above places. Once you get to the North getting around without your own vehicle is possible but not exactly fun nor easy. As for climbing, a number of the climbers around here are disappearing this week to go climb Logan or McKinley. Ice is pretty much all gone unless you're feeling really adventurous. As for rock, there is still snow in the bush and on the mountains but its disappearing fast. Drop me a line if you have any questions.
