So... I found out I'm gonna be in Valhalla for the next four years, starting in August, and am very excited as that means I'm gonna be a full time Gunks-goer. However, I am a little concerned about the winter months. What time of year does the unadaulterated trad fun having start to wane? I'm guessing that there's a solid 4 months of off season at the Gunks, and was considering picking up Aid or Ice climbing durring that time. Hell, I've really only been looking for a good excuse to get into both disciplines. Is there much good Aid in New Paltz? Ice? What about in the general vicinity?

Or do I just need to put on my big boy pants, throw the hand warmers in the chalk bag, and continue trad-ing on through the winter?

Fret not, the Catskills, just north of the Gunks are home to plenty of wonderful ice to keep you busy all winter long. And if you blow through all of that (unlikely) the Daks are a reasonable drive north and have some killer ice climbing.

P.S.
I believe there is even a gym in Valhalla (The Cliffs at Valhalla) if you are inclined toward the plastic at all during the winter.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I should pull more plastic. I'm sure it would help w/ my outdoor skills. Just have a hard time in putting money into something like that.

Yes, and it's a nice gym. I went there several times over the winter.
