Recently I took my girlfiend to the Portland Rock Gym for the day, and had a horrible experience. To start it off, the guy who helped us at the front desk was so high he could hardly talk. I then got myself bellet certified and asked if I could show my girlfriend a few things or if I could get her a quick bellet lesson to get her certified. I was told I couldn't teach her any thing and they couldn't give her a class because they were understaffed for the day. This was funny because I looked into the back office and four guys were sitting on thier ASSES!!! However they did let me bellet her and I was able to go screw around in the bouldering cave. The PORTLAND YUPPY CLIMBERS who work out in the Portland Rock Gym are a bunch of ASSHOLES!!!!! I was there for about three hours and not a single person said hi or responded one of my greetings. I also had one guy who tried to traverse under me while I was on the bouldering wall. I had to get off of the wall because apparently he owned the wall. I won't ever go back to the Portland Rock Gym. I just wanted to let the world know how big of a shit hole the Portland Rock Gym is. SCREW THE PORTLAND ROCK GYM!!!!!!!!!

Not the Portland Rock Gym I know. The only bad experience I've had there was regarding what you can use a gift certificate for. IMO, the staff is incredibly helpful and the patrons are friendly. Any chance you were having your attitude reflected back at you?

Go climb real rock!!!!!! Man made climbing tends to bring out the whine fest and how gyms arent nurturing your inner climber or inner ego! When in doubt run it out!

So, did you build the bridge that you live under? For a first post, you sure come off as a complete prick. T0 for an overly inflammatory tone. P.S. STFU NOOB!

it's standar for gyms to not allow climbers oteach each other rope techniques. get over yourself and stop thinking you deserve special treatment.

You'd think somebody from Missouri would understand the necessity of rock gyms in the absence of quality climbable rock in the vicinity. But you learn something new everyday. Stoneworks is a vastly superior gym, in my opinion, for the Portland Metro Area. Its in Beaverton.

Nobody has said anything about how he spelled belay. I thought he meant ballet lesson! I was there back in the mid 90's and thought the staff were snooty and rude too, but this is Portland, service with a snarl!

Actually I live 30 minutes from Drapers Bluff/Cedar Bluff/ and Giant city and an hour 15minutes from jackson Falls. And i do understand since i moved from Indiana where you got nothing to climb. Regardless I still drove 2-3 hours on weekends to get on some real rock rather than go to the gym.

Come to Salt Lake. ;) I just moved here for the summer and I've climbed with a new group of folks 6 of the last 8 times I've gone to the local gym. Friendliest group of bellet-ers I ever met. Even gone outdoors with these folks several times now. Now if they'd only sell something stronger than 3.2 beer at a reasonable price...

So let me get this right, 1. You spout off about how much gym X sucks, despite popular opinion being that it is a pretty nice and freindly gym. 2. Your profile states that you are currently building gym Y. 3. This is your first post on here. Hmmmmm, sound like a serious conflict of interest, almost to the point of slander.

This is just standard 'first time at gym X' type whining. Lots of people go through it. (yawn.) But there actually is one legitimate piece of information in the post, which is that allegedly the staff wasn't willing/able to provide belay instruction. That's weak. In an ideal system one would be able to walk into a gym, get proper instruction, and begin belaying the same day. Liability is not an excuse for dropping the ball on that capability--that's what waivers are for.

No telling what they may have been doing, there's often more going on than meets the eye during the daytime. And if there were five folks there, they weren't being paid to sit on their asses so something else was likely up - gyms don't generate the kind of cashflow that allows for a half-dozen folks to just sit around.

There's 4 people there...does that mean that they are working? Edit: Or for that matter, what says that they even know how to teach ballet?
