...and the hardmen of the 60's and 70's brag about climbing in EBs. I bet a steel-toed shoe comes in handy for jamming fist cracks, though.

I am now an expert in all thing military climbing! I will were combats and big clunky boot for cracks chimneys and slabs. I will toss that useless belay device away in favor of the tried tested and true Hip Belay.

Thanks, I downloaded the manual. Soldiers can't stop to put on a pair of 5.10s, they climb in their boots. Equipment might be only 3-strand OD rope and some issue steel biners. For those situations, and others, such as a short climbing section done during a hike, those techniques are solid and applicable. Can you post the links to any other relevant TMs or FMs?

a considerable amount of climbing is done in Ranger school, mountain phase. You're right, techniques have to take into consideration that each soldier only has a couple biners and rope to make a harness.
