Dude, Seriously?
How many posts have there been in the last week asking this question?
Two things, do a forum search
get a set of nuts and get a set of cams
every other type of gear will be debated endlessly by everyone below this.

Hey,

He brings up a good point that there are a lot of posts similar to this one.

What is your budget?
What do own currently?
Where is your home crag?

no real need for micro stoppers....unless your doing aid in my opinion. Just get a set. If you get a bd set get a #3 nut to add to it. I'd recommend getting the new metolius nuts they are sweet..... Oh adding to majids post get a set of hybrid cams and some big bros and a 4 valley giants....haha j/k but the nut part is real advice

Beater car. Check.

Pointed west. Check.

Beer to share. Check.

Suh-weet, I finally get to become a trad climber. If only I knew before that it was that easy.

How many times do I have to tell people. Just buy as much gear as you can and never stop. Sell a testicle or two. Sell a kidney. You'll have plenty of gear.

I would recommend buying a trad rack only if you can support it financially in the coming years. In my opinion, it is unacceptable to force your rack to beg. You may want to contact your nearest planned climbing organization to determine whether you are ready for such a commitment Tongue

Couldn't resist. Sorry.

You have beer to share? shit man where are you located and what the hell are you doing there?

Get in the car, step on the right petal until you are at somewhere with some rock that has cracks in it and look for someone with holes in the tops of their climbing shoes.

Yeah nice try. I followed your last directions - Beater car pointed west, beer to share - and look where it got me. Thirty minutes later and I'm calling AAA to get them to come tow my Pinto out of the Pacific Ocean while watching a bunch of Malibu surf bums steal my beer that's floated into the lineup. Not sure what you expected me to find by going west.

Sigh, I knew trad climbing was going to be hard.

Adam:

May I suggest going back to school and learning how actually to spell "beginner". People with low intelligence usually can't have the necessary mental acumen to accurately place gear. In which case nobody should trust you. When you actually learn how to spell the word, then get a full set of cams, nuts, the first 5 tricams, 12 trad draws, two cordelettes, and maybe a set of hexes. Get yourself a tutor.

You live in kentucky too Andrew...You're hilarious. You're probably one of those northern kentucky people who don't regard themselves as a kentuckian, because you think you're cool cause you live "so close" to Cincinnati. I did attend university and graduate school. PM me if you wanna climb some time. Just don't hate me cause i live a whole 45 minutes closer to the red than you do.

Begging for a rack will only get you so far. You either have to pony up and pay hard $$ for a trad rack, or pay in some other way.

Ass gas, or grass, nobody rides for free, isn't that how the saying goes?

Ya know, Dingus, I am not the only son of the Land of Lincoln who may find this implied inclusion of Kentucky in the midwest, somewhat, um disturbing.

I bought a stopper set and a hex set and climb with people who have a full rack. It totally depends on the climbs. Often I can safely place gear on the whole climb with only my stuff, but on a thin crack I double up on small stoppers and grab some little cams.

Everyone is going to say I'm a pansy...but that's fine.

I top rope and second my local climbs and place gear (or remove gear)...I place my friends gear to see what I need. Then I know what I need to do what I want. I guess guidebooks and beta help too. Every crag requires different stuff.

Leave the flashing and onsighting and all that until you're awesome at placing gear, I figure. You'll probably get this feeling like, "Crap, I need a couple big cams to do this, just imagine if I had "???? whatever gear you want" here, then I could climb this and that." Then you know what you need and it's based on your own experience and knowledge instead of a bunch of opinionated, internet posting climbing geeks with racks that would fill a small gymnasium.

I guess I'm an internet geek too, though.
