This is more of a heads up than an all out 5 alarm call the internet police alert:
Some dude is selling a 100' piece of braided rope as "suitable for light climbing" with a safe working load of 244lbs

... now maybe there is some light climbing application i am unaware of where this would be suitable, but I thought it worth putting out there so some noobs don't think it's fine to use as a primary rope for your lifeline.
Furthermore, his ebay username is "utahisboring" which leads me to believe, he doesn't get outside much....

The rope in the photo doesn't look braided - looks like standard woven construction and the description refers to an "inner core". Perhaps "Diamond Braid" is a brand name? However, it does look like the packages of utility rope sold at Home Depot. In any case, totally bogus for climbing, of course.

Not sure why I am writing this but this is now the second thread started recently on EBAY.
Ebay at its core is a large yard sale and with that there are good sellers and bad sellers. I sell a fair amount on ebay maybe even to some of you. Moosedroppings I think I was bidding on some of your stuff a week or so ago. I often sell gear especially lately. I am a high altitude member at moosejaw and have used them to pass along some savings to other people because I always get free shipping. I just collect the moosejaw dollars.
If you are going to be buying gear though on ebay I agree you should not be a noob. You need to understand what you are buying especially if it is used. So if you are new to the sport go to a shop that cann guide you through the process. But I hate it when people make blanket statements that ebay is bad. Hopefully this thread will not turn into that. If you are an expierienced climber though ebay can be a great place to save a few dollars on gear because as we all know gear is expensive. My last statement is always check the sellers ratings especially the negatives and be leary of anyone with very few feedbacks.

I think it's worth pointing out that the seller has a "0" feedback history... which goes hand in hand with your statement. Additionally, I buy gear from ebay all the time, which is why I think it's ok, and sometimes necessary to post threads like this, I know how difficult it is to sort through the crap sometimes... especially for noobs. I don't think I indicated anywhere in my post that ebay was bad, I'll assume it was brought up on some other thread... which is unfortunate.

this ain't gear - it's tie down cord ( i have some at home) which costs about 10$ their bidding 20$ thinking it's climbing rope - somebody's ( NOOB ) gonna get hurt! i am not a member so i can't contact security about it - i'm seriuos - some dope gonna buy it and get hurt

No really this is why I say if you are that easily confused than you shouldn't be buying gear on ebay and in all reality probably shouldn't be buying rope.
I will look at the auction though and most likely report as misleading auction. But I never cease to be amazed how much people will pay for things on ebay just cause they think ebay=deal.

Yeah, I get a kick out of some paying more for used gear than buying new. I agree, do your homework if your buying or selling there, there's good and bad to be had.

I also hope people don't get fooled but there has to be some personal responsibility on both sides. The seller should not have it listed in the climbing section but you can not put all the blame on the seller. At least this particular seller does clearly state the weight capacity of the product.

That's a good thing, as his first listing was inaccurate at best. What the hell is 'light climbing' anyway?
What I love is the inflated shipping charges. He wants at least $20 for the rope, and another $13 to ship it to you.

It's a very complex process involving thin sheets of mylar on an ultralight space polymer frame and a big laser.

Bravo! You can't save the world, but maybe you can save one or two people. You wouldn't have to be an idiot to make the mistake of using that kind of rope for climbing. It seems really dumb after you've had the least bit of experience and instruction, but I made the mistake of buying some inadequate rope before I had started climbing. My idea was to use the inadequate rope for possible light rescue situations that could occur while hunting. I'm glad no one needed rescuing. If they had someone might have had to do so heavy rescuing of my fat A.
We should get some climbers together to promote rope companies to put a sticker on rope that says "not for climbing", like the toy biners.

A light rescue is exactly what would be called for if one were to light climb on that 100' utility cord.
Light rescue = Go to base of climb and put what's left into a Glad Bag
