Trashed rope?????

I set up a zip line last week for some kids, and think that I might have ruined my rope. We didn't have anything to tighten it up with, so we wound up using a truck to stretch it. When I took it down I noticed that the rope was super stiff, like 12ga. wire, and that I could barely coil it. It also seemed like maybe the inner cords separated from the sheath. I noticed that there were a couple of places in the rope that I could actually pinch the sheath together on one side or the other of the inner core.

What do you think?

Rope is a 7/16 Sterling super static, that we use for top roping.

don't you mean Used to use for top roping?

I'll second the sentiment stated above, with a slight downgrade to E-.

....hmmm. Sounds really complicated. But here's a solution. I hear it works really well for most things that need stupid fixes. Duct Tape. Wrap the whole rope with it and give it a good tug with a pick up truck. If it holds, good to go. Or you could just buy a new rope....I personally like my first suggestion.

Sad - borderline terrifying. But it is entertaining to come up with "just as smart" solutions. Shocked

Best bet is to get rid of the rope. Tightening up the rope like that simulates falls (for which even static ropes have a rated limit), and having the zip line up that way for even a couple days takes the life out of that rope.

If you still don't want to bite the bullet and buy a new rope, you may be able to reuse the rope by cutting the sections you can pinch out, giving an extra foot or so on either side of the bad spot. Knowing what the rope was used for, however, I strongly recommend you retire the rope.

If you want to put up a zip line, you might want to look into getting some steel cable and rigging it up to the poles you were using - it'll last a lot longer than the rope. How did you have the zip line set up?

I think you are very lucky you didn't hurt or kill someone!

I think it'll be fine. You're still using seatbelt webbing for anchors and your swami belt, right? Grab a couple of those biners at Home Depot and you should be good to go. Just remember to keep the equipment under your bridge when not in use, the sunlight isn't good for it.

Ouch again.

What can I say I'm a super noob. This is the first rope that I ever purchased, and I guess the first rope that I have ever ruined. I had a question, so I went a head and asked it, just like the seat belts. Chalk it up as experience, and an expensive day.

The zip line worked perfectly. We set up a 20 foot ladder stand, and attached the rope about 5 foot higher. We then stretched the rope across the lake with the truck. Smaller kids could ride just about to the end, bigger kids made it about 3/4 of the way before they began dragging in the water.

Thanks for the responses.

Remember, your rope is your lifeline, treat it well. I wouldn't use my rope for anything besides climbing unless it involved the booty harvest or something similar. http://www.addictlab.com/...ves/farmer_girl_.jpg.

Sounds like the rope came pretty darn close to breaking while you were using it as a zipline. Lucky you didn't drop one of the kids.
