I want to thank all of you who signed the Stop Cogentrix petition to save Smith Rock. It appears that victory is ours. The project that would have built the largest power plant in the Northwest next to Smith Rock appears to be dead. I am not quite ready to take down the sign in the front yard. The official news is as follows: Last week Cogentrix asked the State of Oregon to place their power plant project on hold. Today the state refused effectively killing the project.

The power plant site remains a magnet to other companies that might try to develope it but they would have to start over and we will be there if they do. For now poor market conditions are protecting us. We can only hope that the rest of the Merchant Power Industry will go the way of Enron. It looks like that may happen.

Thanks again to all of you who supported our efforts.

More information: Jeff Freeman, the spokesman for Cogentrix, said that the opponents of the plant managed to delay it. Cogentrix ran out of time and money. The state energy siting council wanted Cogentrix to do a special visual impact study on Smith Rock. Those of you who signed our petition and wrote the politicians raised the state's awareness of Smith Rock and that is why the Energy Council imposed special requirements on Cogentrix. The stop Cogentrix coalition managed to delay the water permit as well.

Truthfully, the plant is dead because of current economic conditions. We delayed it and perhaps, with the changing politics in Central Oregon, we can get some permanent protection for the area. We will have to wait and see what happens in the coming Oregon elections.

According to the founder of Stop Cogentrix, Mary Zemke, Cogentrix's Grizzly Power plant near Smith Rock is DEAD! Time to party.
