Hey all Derry has been reopened due to new owners. This does not give a ticket to hang out though, if you patronize the rocks, please bring a garbage bag and do a little cleaning up!! The ability to use the rocks is on thin ice if ya know what i mean. so climb your heart out, but do a little cleaning to.

Good news! I have been wanting to go there, been to most of the local crags too many times to count, but I did not want to go to a closed location. Will proceed with caution and be a good visitor though as suggested. Are there any parking issues?

no parking issues other than park in the top lot. as soon as you pull of the road. it is such a short approach and realy some spectacular top roping and bouldering. let me know if ya want detailed instructions on how to get there. tis very easy but you know some people.

I've been working on the Adopt-A-Crag event scheduled for Derry this weekend and just want to clear things up a bit.

I have been doing a considerable amount of research into the status of DHR this past week and it appears that the rocks themselves have not changed hands. The land surrounding the rocks was sold last February and the new owners are amenable to climbers visiting the area. However, a re-appraisal of the property lines last week revealed that the sale did not include Derry High Rocks itself.

So it appears that DHR has not changed hands at all....which means that nothing has changed since Derry was closed some ten years ago, at least legally. Apparently the area is no longer posted; I suspect (but do not know for sure) that this resulted from the confusion with property lines in last year's sale.

We are working to contact the current landowner and resolve the confusion; I will be sure to update everyone as soon as I hear more on the issue.

Along those lines, if you have accurate information about DHR, please PM me and help us sort this out.

Thank you all for your patience!
Phil

I was informed today by a guy... who has a friend... who knows the owners... that confirmed that as of yesterday the rocks are open to climbers?

Can anyone confirm this?

As of fall 2004, Derry is closed. No question about it. I spoke with the property owner back then and he made it abundantly clear that he would prosecute anyone found on the property as a trespasser.

There was a lot of confusion at the time, though, because the new owner of the surrounding lands thought that she had purchased Derry, and had announced it as "open". She had not purchased it, however; the old owner wasn't interested in selling, and does not want climbers there.

I would very much hesitate to climb there. Look into it, though. Talk to Fred at Exkursion. If you want to pick up the torch of forging access, I can dig deep in the files and see what contact info I still have...but as of '04 it was NOT promising.

I had not realized this was an old thread at first. I was getting all excited about being able to visit a new area.

If anyone follows up on the access issues, I wish them success. (Alright! Three words with double s in one sentence. I deserve a gold star or something.)

It's a new reply to an old thread Tongue

I spoke to someone on New Years Eve of 2006 that it had opened the day before. I had just met him and i'd like to confirm that somehow before I make a 1.5 hour drive.

Any New updates on whether Derry is open? I have never been there and don't know anyone around there, but it is pretty close to where I live and I would love to find out if it is indeed open. Thanks.

I received an email this morning %100 confirming that this DERRY HIGH ROCKS! is officially open again. This is not through the grape-vine, it is from a reliable source. Hope to see you all out there on the rock.

I heard from more than one reliable source that it should be open to climbing after the cleanup on sat 4/26 @9:15 am. If you want to do the climbing comm some good, show up and help. They plan to be done by one so you can climb. lunch too.

High Rocks Climbers,
> On saturday april 26 the owner of High Rocks, the Westmorland Greenways, the ECP & the High Rocks Gun Club are doing a "clean-up" at High Rocks. If you have climbed at High Rocks & intend to continue climbing at High Rocks, this would be a good opportunity to help foster a good relationship between the climbing community & the property owner.

Anyone have good directions on how to get there? I looked on tim's page and he just has a description of the area. I'd love to have a place up by my parents I could swing by when in town.

This is a note to all who are cleaning and climbing tomorrow. This the first day of Spring Gobbler Turkey hunting in PA and I hope you all know this. It is very dangerous to be in the woods while people are turkey hunting. Look for miss placed cars upon arrival as they may be hunting. Please be very respectful of the hunters. Also it is supposed to rain, a lot, so I hope you all have a rain jacket.

See you there,
Ryan

The clean-up went well today. We really picked up some glass and other assorted trash. Hopefully it will stay that way. I will be climbing there in the next couple weeks with some guys from school. If anyone is open any day let me know and we can get together to climb.
On the climbing side, it is pretty nice. A quite a few hard climbs and a handful of good easy climbs.
Thanks to the Explorers Club of Pittsburgh, we really got a lot of trash picked up and I hope to see you all at the crag again.

There waws a fine group of climbers at the cleanup saturday. There was a lot of trash removed.
I am still not sure about access. There were ppl there that said the clean up was a step in the right direction. Although it is not one of my favorite places, it is nice for lots of ppl. I hope it is opened to climbing.
Of course ppl are still climbing there, so I hear.
