A few weekends ago myself and two friends had a mini epic at Tahquitz. Worst part was when I got down I realized my brand new camera's screen was broken. Moral of the story: don't be an idiot like me and carry your 350$ camera in your pocket, get a case. I have a Sony Cybershot 7.2mp. The screen it self isn't cracked like a broken window or anything, but the display comes up white with a black spot and a very thin line running horizontally. It still takes pictures fine and uploads them to my PC. Anyway, what are my options for getting this thing fixed? Order a part and try to fix it-read-fuck myself. Or send it to Sony or some other shop for repair? Any advice or sympathy would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You will have to send it off for the repair. Had just about the same thing happen with my Sony a couple years ago. My girlfriends brother had it in his pocket and pressed against rock outcropping a bit to hard and crack. The screen was useless. ciao Santana

If you like tinkering with tiny screws and a soldering iron, you can probably save yourself $150. I cracked the LCD on my Casio ex-z750 a few months ago, no idea how (I assume it was while wrestling with my 80 pound dog, not thinking about camera in pocket). After researching my options, I realized that Casio wanted $270 to repair my $350 camera, which doesn't seem too economical to me? I bought a replacement LCD from these guys for ~$90-100 and did it myself with just a small screwdriver and soldering iron (used one of those cold heat ones). Works like new.

Yep you could try that but you might just void the warranty. And unless your confident you will not screw it up or like truello the repair cost was almost as much as replacement then give it a shot. ciao Santana

So I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I'm certainly not the dullest. I know a little about soldering and I've installed a few things on my computer, do you think If I take it slow it's possible for me to do it. Can I download instructions or will they come wiht my new screen? Thanks for the replys guys very helpful.

Like tuna said, I would check with Sony first. Their cost of repairing it for you may not be worth trying to do it yourself, because you CAN and WILL void warranty. That said, I had a simple walkthrough that I followed. The replacement screen does not have directions, unfortunately. http://public.ok2life.com/welcome/index/35 This is one walkthrough that looks pretty good. [edit] I should mention that this is for my z750. You will need one more specific for your model. You don't have to be great with a soldering iron but the only difficulty is that the solder points where you are connecting the new wires are very tiny. With patience it isn't too difficult though. Don't forget to use some type of anti-static device, and also try to find some kind of lint-free cloth as you don't want to introduce dust inside your lens system or on your new LCD. Again, check with Sony. $150 is better than a even-more-broken camera.
