The photo gallery is seriously lacking, and great photos are not being seen.
any chance on getting some of the old sorting functions back?
This would be a good start.

- highest rated
It'd also be very cool to see recent images added sorted by state...

Valid suggestion, no doubt, and I realize this has been on the list for a while. I'll make this a priority and see if I can add some incremental enhancements over the next few weeks. It'll depend on whether it's straight-forward enough for me to implement, and whether I can find the time to do it. I'll give it a shot.

The comments I am getting personally about the photo gallery leads me to believe that enhancements to the photo sorting would definitely greatly benefit rc.com.

Quick update:
I've been extremely busy with my other ("real") job the past month, traveling to New York and Florida from San Francisco every week, so this didn't get much attention. Anyway, I haven't forgotten, just be patient.

I've added some more features and enhancements. You can now also search for top rated photos, as well as photos linked to the routes database.

The search of photos linked to the db is original thanks for this one.
However, if I want to look for the Top Rated Bouldering pics in the Past Week, I still cannot.
I can look (in the advanced search) for the Top Rated pics in the last week
or the Boulderingpics in the past week sorted by Views or Submission dates,
but not sorted by rank.
Or am I missing something?
ANother thing : do you think that the advanced search window could be more vivible (another color or font size or place?)

DDT: Any chance you could add "comment date" to the "Sort By" function in the advanced search? Also, any chance of putting a search in the "My Photos" page, so people can search their own photos without having to go to the search page? It would be nice to be able to have your own photos sorted in some way (and left that way), other than by date submitted.... say by Rating or Number of Votes etc.

I was wondering if there's a possibility to make the My Photos page have a tiled, gallery layout like the main Photos page? Rather than having your photos listed and only have 25 or so per page, you could increase this to 50 or 100. It's a pain to have to go through pages of photos to find the one you want. There is also a lot of wasted space when the photos are listed the way they are now.
You could even included the options in Photo Settings, so each user can change it from gallery to list the way they can the Main Photo page.

Sure. I've made the change. The list/gallery setting on your photo's preferences page (here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...otos/user_modify.cgi) will now also control the layout of the "My Photos" page, as well as your search results page.

Sweet! Thanks for that! That's a heap better as I don't have to scroll as much. Unfortunately though, it still has only 25 displayed rather than the 50 I have set for the Main Photos page. I would like to see 50 on each page.

I was wondering if this issue has been considered yet?
There has been a much improved user-friendly search and layout in the My Photos page in the last year, but there could still be some valued improvements yet. It's nice to be able to see your own photos as a gallery rather than a list but it would be nice to sort them and leave/save them like that, other than in the order they were submitted.
It looks like comments on photos have a date stamp on them and so you would think this shouldn't be an issue to code. This would enable users to "sort by" comment date either within their own photos or all photos. It'd be nice to be able to see the latest comments on either your own photos or any group of photos, rather than clicking on each one individually.

What happened to the photo gallery?
First off, the photo description doesn't show anymore, the only way I figured out how to see it is to be logged out, click on the photo, and click 'read comments', then you can see the description. (EDIT: ok, I see the description over in the right corner...got me confused when I was logged out and saw it the other way...everything else still seems to stand though)
The new look seems ok, but I prefer the list style(still visible when looking at 'new photos') over the gallery style...is there a way to set this preference on the user level? Currently there is an option for list/gallery but changing this setting seems to have no effect.
I also don't see where to search for most recent comment or by location. Seeing a list of the most recently rated photos seems to be missing as well...only the 4 most recently rated are available to view now.

I also just noticed that you can't click on the votes anymore to see who rated your photo...but you can still see what people rate photos through their profile...
hopefully these issues will be resolved...
one step forward, two steps back?
BTW, is there another thread discussing these changes? I searched around but didn't see anything. Strange as it seems to be a pretty notable change...but then again, maybe no one really uses the gallery that much anymore. I've noticed that the number of people rating photos/commenting is way down...and submissions seem to be down as well...perhaps it's time for me to move on...most others have seem to

We gave it a new skin! We've been systematically changing the various sections of Rockclimbing.com, starting with Gear, followed by Classifieds, Calendar, E-mail, and now Photos. I have not made a specific announcement about Photos, but in retrospect I should have.

Yes, you can set this option (here). It will affect all pages and search results, however not the Photos home page.

You can still do this. Just click on the word "rating" underneath the photo.

Glad to see the advanced search page back to normal, it was definitely not like that yesterday 
BTW, I keep changing my settings from list to gallery and back and forth, but I don't see a difference on the main photo page or main video page etc...could be just me though...
Is it possible to sort user photos by most recent comment?
