I have a pair of synthetic boots that are a half size too big. I bought them this way to save my toe nails knowing that most of my climbing would be vertical ice. I’m thinking about filling the space in the toe with “memory foam” in order to keep my heel in the back of the boot and fill the dead space. Any thoughts?

No, unless you like the idea of your toenails falling off. The best thing would be to go to a specialist outdoor or ski shop who will be able to look at your feet and the boots then they can try various things to get the boots to fit you better. If this isn't an option, consider buying some superfeet and some volume reducers off the internet and experiment by yourself with different sock combinations. As a general rule, you should have nice secure heels and about half an inch infront of your toes to allow circulation. Also, try to avoid lacing your boots too tight as this will reduce circulation and lead to frozen feet. Hope this helps.
