Rene Desmaison, a French alpinist honoured as a pioneer of modern mountaineering for tackling more than 1,000 peaks since the 1950s, has died at the age of 77, his publisher said Friday.

Desmaison is credited with making the first successful climbs of more than 114 peaks in the Himalayas, the Andes and the Alps, where he opened up several entirely new winter climbing routes.

"It's so difficult to accept nothingness... You would like to know how things really are beyond life, be sure it's not all a big joke, but, as big as it may be, how can a joke survive for millennia?

Look how beautiful are the stars in the coal black sky, those little twinkling gems, those little fantastic worlds. You've Creation before your eyes, here, on this same mountain that's taking your life and you can't hate, not even now. And what if truth is really here, amongst these pyramids of granite?"

(excerpt from Desmaison "342 hours on the Grandes Jorasses")

Almost in a serendiptious "honouring" of Desmaison's achievement, Scots mixed climbing specialists Guy Robertson and Pete Benson have climbed for the seventh (or eight, depending on you point of view) time the legendary Desmaison/Gousseault line at the north face of the Grandes Jorasses.

Here's the story on Alpinist

And here's a set of pictures of the route by Pete
