i knew a guy named DAN (5.12 trad'ster now)who jumped off a bridge "aussie" style with slack in the line. fell 10ft, couldn't control the rope, then fell the remaining 60 till he met the ground BIG TIME. ouch!!! broken jaw, broken limbs, broken head. missed death by a fraction.

the joy of rappel...

I take the girls I date climbing - not rappelling, when i am so one-sided i can do nothing else on a date. Sport rappelling is for drunk rednecks. I can think of a million other better things to do on a date than go rappelling, but on the other hand i tend to date intelligent girls who appreciate culture rather than the foot high mall hair md 20/20 swilling demographic sport rappelling appeals to.

When I rappel, I do it as conservatively as possible. It only took one good friend who was a highly experienced climber(hard trad, walls, alpine, etc.) dieing last spring in a sloppy accident to make me do things as carefully as possible.

Isn't there already a much more useful technique called a spider rappel. I think it's a method of rappeling with an injured climber. Has anyone else seen this?

So if you want to do that you need to rename it. I suggest calling it the "just before you die" rappel.

If you can do that holding a pistol in one hand and hit a moving target on the ground then I'd say there's a point. Rapelling is for getting down, or canyoneering/caving... The rock to your right looks nice for climbing though...

atg200 - I have tried to go climbing on a date but it only worked out once. All of the other times they either: Tell me they don't want to go climbing, make-up a reason not to go or they will go and have a bad time doing it. But the same girls will go rappelling and have a blast. And they are not all without culture. The last girl that I took out graduated in the top 10 of are high school class, is going to BYU to become a dentist, is on they BYU ballroom dance team, plays the piano and I think she plays another instrument but I'm not sure what it is. Rappelling isn't the only thing we do on dates. But it seems to generate the most/best memories.

bighigaz - It's a great place to climb. You can climb anything you want from about 10 - 110 feet. But no one go climbing here. I stumbled upon it when I was going camping with some friends.

CEDK: You are right, it is a rescue technique in which two people repel of the same device at the same time. I have only done it once and i used a corallet for the rigging. The injured climber generally is situated a little below the non-injured climber. Make sure you then backup yourselves up. This is what a real "spider" repel is. It is possible to do it with more than 2 people. I have heard it being done up to 4 before when a group got stuck in lightning storm. It is a good self rescue technique to know.

Helmets are miricles...you wont die if you have a helmet. Helmets make you invinsible. I allways wear my helmet. You can even spider rap on a slab if you have a helmet. I spider raped the apron and was fine because I had my helmet. Remember: Ropes dont save lives, helmets do.

Do whatever you want, but the only reason I can see to invert is for rescue/tactical purposes, and I won't do it again without a chest harness. Case in point:
So there I was inside a four story tower at the firehouse, rapping (work gets boring sometimes) with a tied harness (the truck with REAL harnesses was gone) with a fig. 8. So I yell for this guy to come in the tower that I would always scare by burning down the rope upside down and seeing how close I could get to the ground. He'd freak and tell me I was crazy. But this time I give him the redneck last words, "Hey watch this!" and proceed to flip over. After I slid out of the harness and it wrapped one of my ankles, I gingerly inched my way down the rest of the rope, hanging six feet below my 8.
Have fun spiderman...

why don't you take the girls you date climbing? Rapping is the bitchwork of climbing. It is boring and it sucks, even upside down.

If you are a sport rappeler you should get off the climbing website.

i always heard it was called a "possum." i've done it before, only on an overhang where you're just rapping in the air... theres nothing too it, lean back rappel upside down, lean forward before you get to the ground. and i've tried a military rappel too where you hook your atc in behind you... sounds cool, but it just basically hurts a lot as your padding isn't taking your weight, the webbing is... and its hard to breathe. a harness really isn't designed to bear weight like that for long periods of time and be comfortable...
