Hello all, I live part time in Bisbee Arizona and have been reconing Cave Creek over by Portal on the border of NM and AZ for years now. I heard from some people that climbers have asked to be able to climb there before but have been denied all access. I am posting this to find out as much as possible about those experiences climbers have had in the past with them so i can re-propose with an informed stance. The climbing in this place would be world class and there is alifetime of it on perfect rock. I would love to develop this area respectfully with all attention paid to the concerns of the park, the park users and the people who live just outside the park. Thanks for any help, Traveler Terpening www.travelerphotography.com

While the only thing I know about that area is how to point to it on a map, it looks excellent. My first few questions would be.. Any idea who has said the area can't be climbed? Who does the land belong to?

Quick glimpse on MapQuest shows it's either on, or nearly on, National Forest Land. If so, talk to the rangers there. Otherwise, might have to get a GPS coordinate, head to the county surveyor's office, find out who owns that land, and go talk to them. If it's on Native American land, good luck getting access. My experience is that such access is rarely granted.

Holy Crap that last photo is amazing! As a route developer that area looks off the hook! I truely hope you can gain access. Try going to the Forest Service website and see if they have quad maps of the area in question. These will show if it is on private or public land. http://www.fs.fed.us/ Good Luck!!!

I remember checking out Cave Creek many years ago (back in pure trad days). The rock seemed too friable and weird for good natural pro. BUT...in the age of the power drill it may be fine. Your pix look great. It may be protected as a bird sanctuary though, so that might be a problem.

Definitely look into it. There are places that everybody just assumes are off-limits to climbing, but in reality have very few restrictions. For example, the Grand Canyon.

Wow, I have relatives in Sierra Vista and am down that way every so often... Looks totally cool! (BTW, Bisbee is totally cool too.) I traveled through Safford area to NM a while back for work and was keeping my eye out for climbable stuff, but most of the rock seemed to be on Apache land, not to mention that a lot of the stuff down that way looked like complete choss too (like the Supes, except perhaps worse).... Good to know SE Arizona might actually have something good to offer!! Oh, P.S., how do you find that name Cave Creek for the area? We have a Cave Creek here in Phoenix just north of the city, so that is what I think of when I hear that name...

I lived down in elfrida a few months years ago. The chiracauas (sp?) were a beautiful place, as was the general area but i don't remember the rock quality being that great. Also, it would be a bit of a drive for most folks so you'd have to put a lot of work into it to get them to come. On the other hand those pics sure look tantalizing. S
