...you picked up a few pieces of trash today after you were done climbing.

I picked up one wad of tape (obvious climber liter), 5 glass beer bottles, 1 plastic beer bottle, 2 aluminum cans, and a few wrappers.

Remember, every little bit helps.

/me raises hand.
its a ritual for me, every time i go climbing or anything outdoors, i look for something to pick up. last weekend in boulder canyon, i got two coke cans in the parking area.
then when i clean my car (twice a year whether it needs it or not ) the trash from different areas reminds me of where ive been.
whatever works

I picked up an old can and a plastic bag, then filled them both up with garbage that was blown out of HVCG in Joshua Tree.

When I was a kid and my dad would take us camping or to the beach or anywhere in nature, it was his rule that we couldn't leave until everyone had picked up twenty pieces of trash. It's a habit I still follow today and I usually bring home a bag of trash everytime.

Thanks for posting this thread.

I especially hate picking up cigarette butts. Please, take all your trash with you--including those old smokes!

Whenever I went camping with my family we always walked around the grounds picking up trash. It's habit now. I hate it when people trash up nature. I'm happy to hear about so many people who also pick up garbage. My friends make fun of me 'cause I'm kinda anal about picking up everything.

Thanks!

Always. Picked up one water bottle, a bit of old shoe, some gum wrappers and a couple pieces of broken glass from Auburn Limestone last Thurs.
Castle Rock is always crazy. Last time I found a empty beer carton and just filled it up. Didn't take long

Every time I go out. Nothing pisses me off more than going some out of the way place and finding trash- energy bar wrappers, tape, cigarette butts, water bottle lids, bottles, cans, gear marking tape etc.

Why can't this pigs stay home? If they can bring it with them why can't they take it back? If you see someone leaving trash let them know it's not cool.

My thought about picking up trash is not only does it leave the area nicer, but I feel most people are less inclined to leave trash where there is none. In an area that's trashed people tend to think...well what's a little more? Best to keep it clean so it stays clean. Plus if people see you they might be inspired to do something.

I just left my Good Deed For The Day screed on the topic about "What It Costs To Climb Outdoors". While carrying an empty haul bag back from the base of Scorched Earth (to go get even MORE stuff to haul up), I went off-trail through the talus and filled it with trash. In all honesty, though, I was looking for booty. The trash just happened to be there. Lotsa trash. No booty.

Gotta understand the SE of El Cap: overhanging wall and people drop stuff. The trail is close to the base, so most booty from the upper area is going to be there, away from the base. And so is the trash. Hump your load on the trail, then go down with the empty haul bag away from the trail to look for booty (your booty is going to be 90% trash, but booty it anyway .. . . )

I only found 1 piece to pickup today! But I pick it up whenever I find it.

People don't always intentionally litter. I've found stuff that's fallen out of my pack amongst all of the draws, hats, harness, etc. mess that's in there. Just take a look around as you're leaving an area to make sure you've got it all.

Thanks!

Good job too all of you! Nice job on the original post except for one thing: it should have been "raise your hand if you didn't pick up after yourself." Then we would find out who it is that litters and we could solve the problem from the source

Does anybody else get totally mad when they pick up the same trash, at the same area again and again. Example, pale ale caps and bottles at the same boulders every couple days.

Always. And if the place has some sort of check-in or ranger station I will go in ask them if they have a trash bag just so they will know a climber is picking up trash.

I found my favorite piece of trash at Suicide rock. It was a large baggie with an aerosol can of insect repellant that had apparently emptied itself on the way up. It was no problem for me to pack it out on top of the 70+ pound of gear I already had. I just can't imagine how some people can be so rude and lazy not to pick up after themselves.

An empty can of Red Bull.

Apparently the consumer was SO nourished and energized by this marketing... er... beverage, that they could not find the strength to pack out the expensive packaging. I was glad I could help them out.

Always try to live by Leave No Trace principles and pass on the good word. Can't count the amount of garbage picked up at crags and trails.

Must say that my regular partners and I love it when we catch someone intentionally dropping trash. We have developed a "Re-education program" based on abject humiliation and intimidation. Shame and guilt can be such wonderful tools.
