Well my vote is for Foster Falls. Sure it may not have bouldering like Obed, but it has like a hundred sport climbs. Considering the fact that I have no pro or rack, sport climbing is for me until I can afford to start putting together a rack. Any suggestions for a date also? October is quickly winding down...

Been having my Dixie Cragger for about a month now... damn thing wasn't $20 though... $32 is printed on the back cover. Anyway, as stated before, I'm a newbie with only basic gear and gym experience only, but if someone sets a date/location I'm game if the schedule allows. Peace

So what dates are best for everyone? Seems the majority wants Foster Falls. I'm thinking end of October/beginning of November. deafclimber, would this be ok for you? Would it be too cold in early December round there? What are the temps like that time of year? Geting more stoked....

You can climb at fosters pretty much year round. Unfortunately, there are only a couple of trad lines. Some awesome sport climbing though. Mostly in the 5.10 range and up. I am not sure, but I think the campground is seasonal and closes sometime around Turkey day. Check out this site for more info on Fosters and southeast climbing: http://www.seclimbers.org/

I've never climbed at Fosters in the winter but they've got a 5.5, 5.7, some 5.8's, bunch of 9's, 10's, and 11's, enough 12's, and 13's and I think one or two 14 link up routes. (Not that I've done anything above 10 though) As for the type of climbing there are some good roof problems (most in the 12's & 13's), lots of face climbing, some slab climbing, some really nice aretes, some crack climbing (not like out west cracks that run straight up a blank wall though) and probably whatever other types of climbing there are. Well then, I'm going to step up and say that we should have the official southeast gathering at Foster Falls, Tennessee on the weekend of the November 8-10. I guess we should start making a count of who all wants to go. Shout out if you think you can make it. I know that FF has very few trad routes, and I don't have any pro anyways, but I will be bringing a quickdraw set. I don't have any rope yet. I'd be up for a trip to the Chattanoga area in December. I've got a trip going to Linville Gorge NC on Nov 8-12 with a group from New Orleans, so if ya'l have it that weekend I can't make it. My last trip to Rocktown/Lostwall had one day of rain so we took off for Chattanoga. 1/2 the people we met were climbers and I can't wait to get out there again and climb in the area.

I'll probably show up for this but can't say for sure yet so my opinion shouldn't count much. I prefer trad but I'm cool with playing on some hard sport routes as long as I don't have to lead them and nobody laughs at my antics too much

I'll probably show for a southeast gathering at Fosters, at least for 1 day. For those that prefer trad, there are a few trad lines there (some that aren't in the Dixie Craggers), enough for a day at least. Yev

I've never climbed a sport route. I went from top rope to trad. I've just danced with the ones who brought me and they don't sport climb. Everytime they catch me staring at a sport route its like "What are doing? get away from there we don't do that." So I want to climb some sport routes. I'll bring the trad stuff, but I'm getting some quickdraws.

That's cool that you want to try the sport routes. I hate it when people get so closed minded about something that its either one way or no way. Climbing is suppose to be for however you enjoy doing it, and we shouldn't let others influence us. These sport/trad debates are just stoopid. I'll see you on both!!

My vote is for Lost Wall/Rocktown. Better trad lines, some sport routes, and lots (and I do mean LOTS) of bouldering. But if the majority prefer Foster, then I'll concede. First week of November (3-9) I'm going to be in Kansas City for a Air-Medical Conference. Can we do it another weekend? Also, if anyone needs picked up at an airport, let me know. Flying into Atlanta is cheap. Also, I've got lots of gear available, and I'm willing to share. Bring your own shoes and harness. Best, JRB

Mike, start out on Afterburner 5.5 and Gravity Boots 5.7 to get a feel for the clipping life. Then graduate to the wonderful and classic Ankles Away 5.9. There's a trad route, Dihedral, just to the left of AW. Don't neglect the cool arete Bear Mt. Picnic 5.8, though it wouldn't hurt to have a couple of small pieces for the!runout! near the top. If you have the time, go way left and do Jacob's Ladder 5.8. It's nice, too. These would all be good introductory 1st time Foster routes.

Forgot to include this in my last post... I vote AGAINST Sand Rock. Was there once, and disgusted at the trash, graffiti, and total lack of respect for the rock that I witnessed. Also, and not trying to bash anyone, most of the great lines have been retro-bolted, ruining some good, hard trad lines. Weather in the TAG (Tennessee-Alabama-Georgia) region is rather nice in late November. Day time temps are usually in the 60's. Nights can get a little chilly... perhaps 40 or so. First weekend in December? Weekend after Thanksgiving? I need a solid date to start planning. Best, JRB

Yeah too many people don't seem to be able to make the Nov 8-10 dates. I'd say either push it back to the 15-17. The following weekend I'll be gone personally, and the weekend after that is Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend so I don't know what plans people have. Then there's the first all December weekend, the 6-8. What weekend would be best for everyone? I can do any of the above mentioned. Also, and I don't know if this has changed, I learned that you can't climb at Foster Falls on Monday's and Tuesdays. Give a shout whats best!

Thanks Tradpuppy. I have marked the routes in the book. I climb at Sandrock all the time since it is only 45 miles away. Too bad it is so skanky. There is something there for everyone.

I have not heard or seen anything about Foster Falls being closed Monday and Tuesday. I have seen no postings, there or on the internet, about this. The last time I was there on a Monday or Tuesday (six weeks ago?), no one commented on this, and I did see other hikers and climbers (just not very many).

I was there just last Tuesday and climbed. If it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays I haven't seen anything for it. Now Horse Pens 40, the newly reopened bouldering area in Alabama, is closed a couple days of the week, I think Mon and Tue.

I'd probably go Nov 30 - Dec 1. Dec 6-8 I will be in the area but probably won't have time to climb. Nov 15-17 is right after my NC trip but I could probably make it, as long as I cound find some drivers! Hey to make the selection easier, how about everyone go to the following site and vote: http://www.teamengine.org/html/showpage.html?page=survey.html After a week or so we can look and see what date the most people can make.

Fosters is not closed on Mondays and TUesdays. Earlier this year our bastard governor closed many state parks on Mond and TUes of every week due to 'budget' issues. As of now, the state parks have been reopened 24/7.
