Let's all be negative to each other.

Why would we want to build community in our sport?

In some sports, just getting on a team makes you a player. Sit the bench on a crappy soccer team? You are still a soccer player.

When do you identify yourself as a rock climber? There's another thread going asking "when are you elite?"

So why do we put each other down when we are talking about our experiences, our climbs, our identity?

Spray away, I want to hear it.

Spray away!

Why is it spray if you talk about something you have just done, but not if you take someone else along so that they can watch you and then tell everyone for you? Isn't that just spray by stealth?

If you are excited about something you have done that is an improvement for you, then that's great! I get inspired by people who are excited about their achievements, it makes me want to go out there and give it my best too!

Whether it's a 5.6,or 5.13, if you are excited about it, go ahead, talk about it!

The people who get upset forget that climbing progress is an individual thing, and the level you climb at and are proud of does not in any way degrade their accomplishments. It's often a jealousy/self-importance thing.

OK now, let's wait for comments from the SPRAY POLICE

"where does spray begin and enthusiasm end?"

It's dead easy. Spray is incessant broadcasting about your achievements. The sprayer monopolizes the conversation. Enthusiasm can be recognised easily as the enthusiast sometimes shuts up and listens to others.

I love talking about climbing and my latest achievmnets, if that makes me a sprayer... so be it. i LOVE JUST AS MUCH TO HEAR ABOUT OTHERS AND THEIR ACHIEVMENST, TALK ALL YOU WANT. As long as you are not putting anyone down i think it's ok to talk about how your climbing is going.
