I own an ATC which has a blemish on one side of it. Visually the blemish looks like a tiny crack, and appears to be only in the coloured anodising.

Next to this spot a "2" has been stamped, indicating that it was detected during the quality control before the ATC left the factory.

My question is not about the safety of this device (as that is obviously impossible to answer over the net!), but about what testing is done on "seconds" before they leave the factory.

Does anyone have any info on what tests are carried out before such a piece is allowed out into the public domain?

I am not sure if ATC's are individually strength tested before they are released (I guess not - as I understand it they only test a statistically significant sample i.e. the 3 sigma system). Would "seconds" or pieces with cosmetic blemishes be individually tested?

Thanks for the input,

Fishy.

Edit: I am trying the Aid forum in hope of a better signal to noise ratio - sorry if it causes a problem for you.

I would imagine that just like their cams, they pull test each one to half its rated strength. That and whatever tests they usually do to ATC's they would have to do to cosmetic blemishes if they intend to sell them. Big legal isssue otherwise. Intentionally selling defective merchandise would be it. *New train of thought* In fact, I would think that they test them more rigorously for that very reason. I would talk to the people who sold it to you, then Black Diamond to find out.

Does anyone know if ATC's are also pull tested to half their strength like cams and crabs?

I wasn't able to find that anywhere.

B.D. factory seconds meet all strength/safety requirements that firsts do.

They are cosmetic seconds/blems, and because of this they can't sell them as firsts, as some people are especially picky. All it really means is savings for you, as they'll scratch up right away and you'll never notice except for that "2".

Lastly, I've climbed on plenty of B.D. seconds and they're great.

If you really want to know, Email them.

Or, if you are bored and just want to killing time, I guess asking here will work just as well.
