Witch hunt, moi, of course we want a witch hunt. Ya can't come here to this rock climbing site and call us "assholes". Nuh uh. No siree. We have been shown the way in that ownage thread and we have seen the light. Now if only we could track down Emanuella Fofana and her Nigerian friends, lemme guess, they live in Nigeria.

holy shitstorm batman, this is like CSI. I am originally from MO, I'm sure the trip is not entirely necessary, just offer a bounty of a 12 pk of PBR for his head and you'll get results from those boys in Fenton.

I also got a message from Jay, from dailyclimber. He is definitely not the OP, I am going to edit one of my posts accordingly so as to not implicate him and his small company in any mess of someone elses making.

I am in no way accusing the above mentioned websites.

I have collected data from a variety of reliable sources and put said data together. There was no guessing or inferences when gathering this data, if a direct connection could not be made it was not used.

This is where my part ends; I have given the results to a few people who have pm’ed me. Where it goes from here is up to you.

There really isn't enough info on that poster... A dynamic IP that belongs to a major ISP isn't going to do much for ya without a subpoena or a huge corporation that nobody wants to mess with (like a major international financial institution) behind you. There's no name, there's no domain listing, there's nothing but an IP that doesn't necessarily even belong to the same person anymore. If the ISP holds arp table entries when a modem disconnects, there's a good chance he still has the IP but if not - you guys are messing with someone that had nothing to do with anything.. If that kid on the other forum was actually a casualty of mistaken identity he'd have a hell of a libel and harassment case against a lot of people.

That other board found the info on that shitbag because of the whois record for his domain, not his IP address. They had the guys name, address, ph#, etc. The forum released a lot of personal info on the dude too, they confirmed his name, gave out his DOB, etc. That's a positive match for the kiddie fucker, and the guy is taking it WAY too well for it to not be him. The forum did what they did because they wanted the fame and notoriety that comes with having a thread like that. Not illegal, but I guarantee I won't ever start an ID on a forum that willing to give up its users, I seriously suggest nobody else does either.

That said -
I applaud the effort to own the poster, but please, be mindful of what you may be doing. As someone said, tracking someone down on the internet isn't difficult - as easily as you can get someone's IP and ICMP flood them, they can see where the attack is coming from. Spamming a forum is straight up douchebaggery, but DOS attacks are illegal.

We have all that info, and ip address on its own is completely useless. 5 minutes on the net and you can find out that info.

As for the rest of yr post, completely wrong. That’s the info you get from a "google search" for "how can I get a name from an IP address" almost verbatim.

I'm curious what is incorrect in that post? I don't want to get into a my geek card is bigger than your geek card debate, I'm really curious what is incorrect.

The "name" info that is public info is a host name, not necessarily the person using the IP. If the person owns a domain and an IP range, AND has reverse lookup configured on their DNS - then it may come back to them personally - but that's only if the person knows just enough to be dangerous, but not enough to really do it right.

There are other ways to find info.. identD, Netbios, unsecured services, etc.. That all depends on the end user.

In the case of a domain, you can get the name of the owner and technical contacts from public whois records. If the company hosts the domain themselves and you know how to do some other searches there is more info to be found, but a domain IP and a user IP are very different beasts.

With a public user IP, you can trace it all the way back to the persons router/modem (or proxy if they're smart), but unless you're doing some hacking that's as far as you're going to get. Even if you get past the router or firewall you won't necessarily get any info on the person if they're smart enough to not leave it on the machine. Most people think they're invisible and anonymous on the interwebs so they leave all kinds of stuff on their machine... In my case, go ahead... My porn collection and my tivo are in my DMZ. Have at it. :)

We must talk if you have free porn, call me tommorrow at 303.346.4xxxxx

And by no way did I mean to imply that my geek card was bigger than yrs (unless they have been issuing new ones).

My disagreement is with your overall statement. There are about 16 levels of going about finding someone from an IP address: Examples of 3

1. Non-technical Route:
Jim Smith gets ip address uses ip look tools and finds network services provider. DEAD-END, without a subpoena .

2. Non-technical Route:
Jim knows that network services providers are required to submit certain info to other public governing agencies. With a lot of work Jim discovers a gold mine of info that is public information.

3. Technical Route - 1 day:
Full scale software retrieval of all public and private data pertaining to any activity from source within last 9 years. Raw data includes about 55000 pieces of information.
Patterns are now very clear.

And # 3 is only the beginning of the tools available to use. And we are not even talking about those tools that are in the Gray Area (those pushing the legal limits). Add 1 week, 3 IT guys and pushy paralegal and you can find out just about ANYTHING. And that’s doing it the legal way (no gray area software).

Normal everyday people are probably not going to be able to track down an individual ( I have been surprised by a few of my client’s abilities to find people that have messed with their servers - guess it depends how pissed off you are). Bottom line, it is easy to find reliable information if you know what you are doing.

Telling people that reliable information is inaccessible – is incorrect. Most of you would be shocked by how much information about you is collected. Your email can be easily read, and your surfing habits easy tracked and that’s just the beginning.

Ahh ok. I know what you're saying. I should have been more careful with my wording. It's not inaccessible, its just not easy to find without specific knowledge of various resources, and a lot of free time (or, a pushy paralegal). Social engineering mostly, shady but not illegal. Just gotta know who to call and what questions to ask.
Before I changed positions in the company we got calls like that all the time, but every one got stonewalled. If they want that info they should know who in the company to call already.

Yeah, the reality is that most people's IP address changes on at least a weekly basis. If you have high speed (like myself), the ISP reasigns me a new IP address to my router every week via DHCP. That is pretty normal across ISPs. (for security reasons)

ISPs have a huge bank of IP addresses that they rotate across their users, so Googling an IP address will rarely yield any valuable information, unless it is a static IP address.

However doing a "Trace" of the IP address while it is being used will reveal the router hops that the person is using and terminate at the ISP router location that the user is using. Which is usually within 25 miles of the user. So it gives you a general area.

Beyond that, you have to contact the ISP for more specifics on who had that IP address.

Since that is not going to happen, I figured I would pull up the name of the closest sex offender within that 25 mile area. We might as well blame him... Laugh Unfortunately, it is too late to win the 2007 Ownage of a Troll award...

(of course maybe phil could give us the email address of where the RC.com account confirmation was sent... Shocked)

I agree. I don't think he was "spamming", in the sense of trying to sell or promote something. If he were, obviously he would have included where to buy or get whatever he was trying to promote. Nor would he create a title to insult the reader if he were trying promote something.

He was obviously trying to create trouble for you guys or do something he thought was funny.

But even if he is not a sex offender, it would be nice to get his address so I could send one of the local sex offenders over to his house...Laugh
