Do many climbers take 2-way radios with them to the crag? I do, and I find them quite useful, especially when you can\\\\\\\'t see your belayer. What kind of radios do you use if you do have them?spyder

We take them all the time. especially on multi pitch routes. Last weekend we were n Beacon Rock in the Columbia river gorge with winds so strong and loud there wasn’t any chance you could hear your partner. The radios were great.
We use the Motorola Talkabouts.

Cool. They are great but I want to get one with really good VOX capabilities.

Radios rock, i love my little talkabouts, and as nice as it is to have clear communication with your belay, i dont like to keep in on my harness cause i dont want to drop it. So i put it in my pocket, and then its hard to get to it, and it pokes me when i move my legs. what do you guys do about that?

I have a partner that is a fiend for motorola talkabouts, and I have to admit that they can be pretty useful sometimes, but for god's sake turn them down. They can be really annoying when other people have them cranked up really high and are talking away.

p.s. I'm not as bitter as the post makes it sound, I promise.

bretterick, I bough a little camera case with a loop sewn in it. Attatch it to a carabiner on your harness' gear loop. Unzip it and you can easily get to your radio. Just make sure you get a case large enough that it zips completely shut. My first case was too small and the antenna was in the way, it came unzipped and I dropped my radio 40+ feet. Found all the pieces though and it still works great.

If it has a loop (talkabouts), tie webbing through it and clip it to your harness other wise make a loop out of tape and put it on your harness. They work fine just pushing the button and talking while it's still on your harness-you never have to take it off and thus you don't have to worry about dropping it.
