I am looking for a decent and safe sport climbing area in PA. Something worth the trip. I am from NE PA. If you know of such an area, please let me know. Thanks.

Hey there,
I used to go to school in Jersey, so I know the area a little bit. Don't know of any local "sport" areas offhand though...others can probably help you there more than I can. However, a place that people might NOT mention is Ralph Stover State Park in Tinicum, down by New Hope on the Delaware River. If you're in NE PA, it might not be too far. Anyway, it's definitely not a "sport" area; mostly old-school trad and toproping. But if you're really jonesing, there's probably enough sport routes there to keep you busy for a full day = a handful of 10s and 11s, so maybe worth the trip. If you know anything at all about trad though, I'd bring a set of nuts with you, since several routes that "can" be led with quickdraws only are really mixed pro, and benefit a lot from a few nut placements.
You can find all the info you'd need in Rock Climbing New Jersey (Falcon Press). Sorry, I don't know if the area is in Rock Climbing Pennsylvania, but it's probably a safe bet.

Try looking up Birdsboro, just outside of Reading. All sport, mostly shorter stuff, but some taller stuff in the 5.10 and up range.
You can find the info in the routes database.

has safe harbor been reopened? Climbed there bout 11 years ago. Great area, but access is very touchy. Anybody have info on reopening?

I climb at Birdsbro a lot when I'm home from college its great cause it is close, I don't know how far you are from Reading but if is it more then a 2 hours I don't know if it would be worth the trip. There is a lot of good stuff, just seems like there would be better stuff closer to you if you are way north.

used to live outside of birdsboro, good backyard crag.
depending where you live, and how long a trip you are thinking, don't rule out: Gunks, Adirondacks, rest of New England climbing.

There is sport climbing east of pittsburgh near ohiopyle. Search in the Southwest region and see Kraulick(spelling???) lost crag, break neck and others in the area. A bunch of short sport routes.

Try Mocanaqua across the river from Shickshinny. There are two different areas there, one to the left after you cross the bridge down near the wastewater treatment plant and the other is on the way out of town toward Glen Lyon. Many other undeveloped areas in between in the old strip mine.

The correct spelling is Kraylick. Awsome place to climb, lots of routs around 60-85 feet high. You can top rope in many places, never sport climbed it but you could def do it. Routes range from 5.5 to 5.11. Doesn't seem like too many people climb there, it is very confusing to get there and scary people live in the surrounding area. Look up Tim's Climbing Page on google for directions and maps.

What are these scary people you speak of?
Are there alot of sport routes there?

No Safe Harbor is most definitely closed to climbing.

Kraylick is closed to climbing unless you belong to the gun club that owns the laqnd. Tim's climbing page is not working lately either.

How far are you willing to travel? Although its not in PA, if you are in NE PA, might not be too far to go to West Point, NY. It should be just a slightly shorter drive than the Gunks. I have not climbed there personally, but understand it is all bolted, and have heard mixed reviews on the climbing itself. Cant be any worse than Birdsboro, but that isn't really saying a whole lot. If your interested I have a PDF format guide book. Send a message and I could email it to you.

Where did you get this info at??? I climbed there twice a week for 5 months straight and never had an issue this past summer. As far as sport climbing routes go, there was 1 route set up this summer but that is all i noticed. You could def get a few routes set up if you wanted. I only top-roped it and I am not very knowledgeable on sport climbing.

There are no posted signs anywhere near the climbing area. We drove right to the top of the rocks and climbed for hours, no one ever said anything to us nor did we ever see anyone near there. We went during the week so maybe that had something to do with it. On a few occasions there would be other people climbing as well. I am curious to hear if anyone has had a recent encounter with anyone this past summer or fall. In the route section of this forum it says it was clearly marked with no trespassing signs back in 2006, maybe something has changed in the last 3 years.

What areas in PA are not closed to climbing? It seems like 90% is off limits. I reside in the State College area and almost all rock in the area is closed.

It feels the same way with Hunting and Fishing, every where you look land is posted. The Game Commission needs to purchase more land in this state to keep PA "Wild and Beautiful"

There are quite a few State College areas open. Most of Hunters Rocks is on public land. The Goodman Quarry is of SGL. There are a few spots of Rt 22 that are publicd. There are a few spots near Donation as well on SGL. Elk is not too far, Lock Haven has stuff on public land as well.
As for Krachlick, contact Bob Value the AF coordinator. He would have specifics about that spot.

Where is this Goodman Quarry? and where in Donation is the rock accessible? I was under the impression that all of Donation was closed.
