Hey, i'm headed to college in Asheville next year and was wondering what kind of ice there is in the area. I live in New England so i'm pretty spoiled as far as good ice goes, but will i be able to find any ice down there? Thanks

I believe most of the gas stations and grocery stores sell ice. Some folks get out a lot. Check the carolinaclimbers.org site and pm the webmaster, Brandon. He gets out as much as he can, lives in Asheville and keeps a pick on conditions.

In the Brevard area you'll find ice, when conditions permit it. I had my first taste of ice in 2 years last weekend. The road cut on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Brevard is north facing and high up. Fairly tall formations, the tallest being close to 50 feet. But, its a 2 hour hike to the ice along the road; the road is closed during the year. As for the quality, reminded me of early season NE ice but with less then ideal top outs due to the number of tiny shrubs and lack of soil/ice to get off the vertical. All in all, I wouldn't expect to keep ice climbing while down here. But the year around rock climbing is nice! (or biking, boating, etc) Cheers, brad
