So you want to make some Russian aiders, eh?
You will need:
-Two Big washers
-Rap rings
-About 10m of webbing
-An old closed cell sleeping pad
-Needle and thread
-2 crabs (or hooks…I haven’t tried it)
-About 2 hours
Ok, so this is really easy to do, eh?
Making the stirrups: (I think that’s spelled wrong)
Tie a big overhand knot. This will be your step. (Leave about 1-1/2 foot tail on one side)
Tie it so when you loop around your foot, the knot it just below your knee.
Take the tail and re-weave it through on section on the overhand knot, under both piece of webbing.
Now put the washer on the working end of the webbing as show…if you skip this you’ll never get them untied, and they won’t be adjustable.
Re-weave the end back threw, but this time put it in-between the two-piece of webbing, so it is sandwiched in the knot.
This is your makeshift “buckle”
Ok, try them out. You’ll find your calves hurt. No prob…cut up that old sleeping pad and sew it onto the webbing, being careful that you can still do up the straps without the padding getting jammed.
Making the Aiders:
This is obvious. Take a piece of webbing and clove hitch the rap rings onto the webbing. This is where you will clip or attached your stirrups (sp) too.
So there you have it! Not too peachy?
Note: the stirrups are likely to be too loose around the bottom of your boots…I just duct tape them to the bottom of my boots so they don’t fall off.
Also Note: I have not yet used these outdoors, nor am I a hardcore aid climber. These things have not yet been seriously tested by me.

Beyond Gravity,
I applaud your engineering spirit but...
The hooks are what make the system.
How are you gonna unclip the attachment beaner when you are top-stepping???
I think when you test them you will realize this is key. You will also note that the hook has been one of the key design topics in other threads on this style aider.

Also two of your rap rings will weigh as much as a whole aid-trier. These things will be heavy. I can put my aider in my pocket can you?

part of the reason i like russian aiders is that they are not bulky and really reduce the clusterf*ck, and tht they are light for alpine climbing. i'll keep using my trangos.

Hey guys, I actually made some prototypes this summer.
I tried BD hooks (the small ones) and fifi hooks on them. Fifis work great!!!
With them, you can easily hook your aider's biner or the piece of pro itself.
(and get both hooks in...because they're so narrow)

Yes, I actually do want to make some Russian Aiders. Partly because we can't seem to buy them at the moment, and partially because I enjoy making some of my own gear. (But, sorry Jeremy, I think I want to approximate the commercial package a little more closely than using your instructions.)
So, I would appreciate anyone who can tell me just a few of measurements from the commercial set they have. (I suppose I can estimate from the pictures, but I might save myself some grief if I just start out with something that has proven to at least work.) Here's what I would like to know if someone would spend a moment measuring it out:
1. the length of the Aid-trier
2. the distance between the top of the Aid-trier and the top ring
3. the distance between subsequent rings (is it consistently the same all the way down?)
Additionally, does anyone see any significant value in having two rings at the two lowest levels as opposed to the Trango Aid-trier that has only one ring at each of those places?

(BTW, for anyone thinking of making your own, even the components are going to cost a bit; it's understandable why Trango charged so much for these things.)

Having two rings lets you change feet on the aider without using a second one. On a traverse or at a hanging belay, this is really nice.
