There is no contest there. indoor climbing isn't rock climbing it's just training. Outdoor climbing actually provides a challenge because you actually have to find your next move as apposed to looking for the next piece of colored tape. Plus indoor climbing is just too safe. What's the fun of falling on a padded floor. Outdoors, if you don't set up your toprope, anchors, or protection properly your screwed. More risk equals a better adrenaline rush.
I'm not one for training, so indoor climbing really doesn't hold much attraction for me. I have gone once this year because I miss the movement of climbing, but it's a pretty disappointing substitute.
Climbing is a lifestyle thing for me, and not only about the movement. I love the cammerraderie, the approach, orienteering, the hanging out after a good day on the cliffs and all that goes with it.
There's only one reason to climb outdoors, and that's so I have something to spray about at the gym.
Also, real rock is good training for plastic since they tend to set the routes a bit harder out there; you need to train hard outside so you can get back indoors and impress all the n00bile young ladies with your skillz.

although the majority obviously climbs rocks, there are some people who like the gym better. why would you ever flame someone for an activity they enjoy, just because you prefer another one?
I climb 3 times a week indoors during the weekend and then go outdoors on the weekend. I do high grades indoors for the challenge and the fitness and I do average grades outdoors because it's fun, scary and brings out that adventure spirit that human kind did away with many years ago. Plus, the outdoor culture pisses over the indoor shirtless belay spray fest.
Indoor has it place for sure. It's great when the weather is shit, crags or too far away etc...but it's certainly no substitute for the real deal.
I climb mainly indoors because it's easier to just start climbing and I don't really make the time to go outdoors because there are too many other things I like in life that I don't want to give up. That said if it were just as easy to climb outdoors and have the variety of climbing I have indoors, I'd definitely do that.
A good comparison, Indoor is like skate boarding to outdoors surfing. Sure your kinda standing in the same position but your not doing the same thing at all.
Indoor's controled enviornment with holds that you dont consider the strength of is like going to a skatepark. You dont have to think about all the things that you SHOULD consider outside.
Compare to: Eating at a resturuant or cooking your own food. Or any two things that on the surface from a bad angle in flat light could kinda look the same.
Inside, nice people that care about your safety.
Outside, nature trying to kill you for her amusment.
That said, I like outdoor climbing more because its special, I need good weather and time off and motivation. But that doesnt mean I dont like the gym alot as well! I try not to compare so I dont find ether lacking something its not ever gonna have.
Indoor climbing is a lot like running errands...its a pain in the ass most of the time and you really don't feel like doing it, but you know it needs to be done so you do it anyway.

No, skateboarding stopped being "pretend surfing" 30 years ago. A better comparison is park skating and street skating. Skateboarders see skating on architectural features not purposely built for skateboarding the same way climbers see "real rock." Very hard skateboard moves are done in skate parks, but park skating doesn't get the same respect as street skating, where the ground is rough, cars and pedestrians get in the way unpredictably, and there is a risk of getting fined or arrested.
Just like climbers, skateboarders will skate in parks when it's convenient or rainy, but people look down on pure park skaters the same way that climbers look down on pure gym climbers. Nobody cares about the type of vert skating you see on TV, the same way that nobody cares about climbing hard indoors.
Even though there are people who prefer skateparks or climbing gyms, they won't readily admit it for fear of losing man points.
Outdoors is my favorite. I've climbed in a gym twice, and it was okay, but I like being outside and I like adventure. Anyone who has a favorite spot on a wall that no one knows about can testify how sweet it is.
That said, if you like climbing indoors, climb hard. That's cool too.
This thread is great...a lot of interesting analogies.
I watch nbc, because I don't have cable.
I got to local college basketball games, but I really like the NBA more.
Steak is great, but I am not going to starve on veggies.
I drive a Prizim, because well it is mostly a toyota corrolla and parents helped me just out of college get it and they had a GM card that went towards the down payment and it still runs great after 10 years and only worth $2500 in trade in and is worth more then $2500 to me because even a new car of similar build you can't even buy because the crap everything up with navigation, onstar electric windows and automatic shifting and I would have to get new feet for my thule rack to fit.
You shouldnt be sorry, NASCAR is really pointless, mindless, and waaaay too repetitive. I dont understand how people can watch that crap. Well I do understand, but I find it hard to imagine how that could be entertaining. LOL. My only thought would be for the cars. I do love cars. LOL, but not driving in circles. FUCKIN A
