The way i see it, the mountains rarely offer a second chance when it comes to safety. but what's the deal, is climbing with a helmet 'not your style'? what makes the risk worth taking? It's a good thing you got involved with a sport with no risk involved then . Seriously, climbing is all about personally deciding your level of risk. Hardly anybody has ever been forced to climb dangerous mountains; it's a game we choose to play. So, why shouldn't the choice to wear a helmet or not play a part in that already artifical game? Personally, like many others have stated, I generally climb with a helmet for gear routes, and sans-helmet for sport routes. Others choose to solo those same routes sans anything but their skill to belay them, and no helmet but what their mother gave them. They have decided to play the game a bit differently than you or I. If they don't know the cosequences, then they are a fool, and, if they do, they possibly have the answer to the question you have asked.

Josh Yes, exactly the point thank you for making it once again for me. Each climber makes a their own choice and I vote for helmets outdoors always. Exactly--all you get is one vote. And, since your levels of climbing experience and talent are both extremely limited, we should probably discount your opinion on this subject substantially. Curt

Curt, unlike you I am not going to brag my ass off and make myself look any tougher by not wearing a helmet, risk your life all you want. When you pass on , I won't shed a tear for you; your friend and family yes. Just don't smack your head walking back from the climb drunk is all. Makes me wonder just how some people get by, I was safe yestereday so I am safe today attidude is truly dumb. I guess skinner was dead (not helmet related but equally dumb arrogance) is a prime example, please don't do anything as stupid and save alot of people money from buying unneeded new harness. Based on your ass wipe "I know better" if you fall to your death everyone who knows less will automatically have to fix it themselves to the ground. No helmet, I won't climb with you, don't give a fuck if your the ghost of Hilary (mind you he would show alot more class than you).

I don't climb with weakmos or dumbshits, so you've already got two strikes against you. Also, you could at least spell "Hillary" correctly, since you've cited him in your post. Fucktard. Curt

Severe back and spine injury is also very common in climbing falls; do you wear a spine protector as well? In all sincerity, I'm hoping you'll answer yes.

I have always heard and thought it absolutely made sense that they belayer wear the helmet. Earlier posters have illustrated the reasons. Its as simple as potential 2 dead vs 1 dead/unconscious/injured. If the leader is afraid of their noggin because of a fall, I suggest another helmet or a different route is in order. --Nathan

The consequences of an accident may be more severe, but the likelihood of shit going wrong in the first place is equal. We understand your choice, but I question if you and others really wear a helmet every single moment of every single day at the crags. Do you wear it on the drive, as well? I've watched people with helmets do some incredibly unsafe things. Rope behind the leg, toproping off shoddy single-point anchors, toproping on crossloaded biners, etc. Helmet use is far from my first criterion for judging a partner. YMMV.

Use the helmet for it's intended use. To protect your bananas and avacados!

There was this guy on rec.climbing who stored those windproof matches INSIDE his helmet. I forget his reasoning, it was way whack though. One day those fucking matches burst into flames, set his head on fire. True. Or so he said. Helmets can be damgerous! DMT
