Climbing up rocks generally.
Any obstructions encountered are protected by a variety of nuts, chocks and slings on horns and trees.
This differs from "Sport Climbing" where one only clips existing bolts.

Trad = Traditional
Meaning any piece of protection u will place have to be removable bottom line is no altering of the rock during the climb (I.E. bolts) u leave the rock the way u find it climbing the rock with traditional protection and means

Well, traditionally, pitons were the only way of protecting climbs. Trad climbing is (mostly) free climbing while putting in your own protection from the ground up. Clean climbing is not altering the rock, whether it be on a free or aid climb. Clean climbing is preferred as part of a more general LNT ethic, but pitons aren't just for aid.
