What is the best time, weatherwise to boulder in southern California areas like around San Diego, JTree, LA. Which month is it too hot or too much rain? Been to JT, Bishop, Stoney Point, please list some musts for a foreigner! thanks

Stoney is good year round but it gets a little snakey around june. Santa barbara is good year round as well. Try horse flats in LA as well, its at 5k feet so its a little cooler.

You can chase the shade in J tree over the summer, but I personally think it is a little too hot.

I'd stay away from JT much past April. By May it's getting pretty hot... June is too hot for my taste. I was in JT last January and we had perfect weather. It was a little cold in the morning and at night, but not bad otherwise. I'm looking at March or April next year. I'd agree with the others... San Diego isn't bad year-round... higher areas around LA would be good too. josh

Black Mountain and the Tramway are the best areas in SoCal for the summer.

For a foriegner coming to socal to boulder I'd check out San Diego spots like Mt. Woodson, Santee, Mcqueen(Ghetto) Boulder. The Tramway in Palm Springs is a nice break since you've been to Jtree and the elevation makes it cooler than the valley below. Black Mountain is good too but the path up the mountain can be sketchy without a proper vehicle.

Black Mountain road will probably be closed until late May, and it's just as well, 'cuz the place will be snowed in. The Tram is also at high elevation, and this winter has been snowier than last. If you are coming in mid-March, JTree and Woodson are your best destinations. JTree is where you will want to start-- good camping (although these days you had probably better reserve), cheap motels, acceptable mexican food, gorgeous desert and hikes, and enough grainy bouldering to keep you happy for awhile. You can drive to Palm Springs on a rest day and take the Tram up and look at the snow. About an hour's drive. Woodson has better rock, but it's less aesthetic, heavily slanted towards harder finger cracks, and you'd really want to stay in a motel or hotel. Not recommended for yr trip unless you're a crack specialist and/or are in the us navy and/or have friends/family/business in san diego. County Park in Idyllwild will probably be climbable, at least by April, and is good for a day. Plus it's pretty and you could spend another day hiking up to Tahquitz and either rope climbing or just scrambling up the Friction Route. Idyllwild is about 90 minutes drive from JTree, so you could use it for a day or two as a chance to recuperate from Josh. If you are really hard core about yr bouldering, then you will meet up with locals who can hook you up with the many, many obscure local variations. Try socalboudering.com. New site, don't know how they'll respond to visitors.

Thanks guys for all this info, very helpful. So would you think Tramway would have tons of snow in mid-March usually?? Is Santee good to have a kid in tow? When you park at Stoney Point is it only in the emergency lane along the major highway? Is that legal? hopefully we can find a cheap motel near JT- any suggestions?

for the motel at j tree, do a yahoo local search for motels in twentynine palms, your best bet.

I haven't been to Santee in 25 years, so you're on your own there. But I'd think that if you want a concentration of thin slabs, Rubidoux has more stuff and it can be nice there in March. JTree has a a few lowball motels. They can be OK. But they can also crawl with tweakers. 29 Palms is a long way from the West Entrance. I would either rent a house in Monument Manor (Susan Peplow over at ST and joshuatreeclimbs.com can hook you up) or one of the quieter ones in Yucca Valley. If I had to motel it, i'd stay at either the small one behind the German restaurant on the East end of YV (on a frontage road a block off the hwy--can't recall the name) or at Yucca Valley Inn right at the top of the Morongo grade. YVI is still closer to the West Entrance than anything in 29, and it's a quick getaway to Palm Springs + Idyllwild. Tram will have tons of snow in March-- County Park in Idyllwild should be fine. South Ridge will be good if the road is open and you have high clearance. And I wouldn't go to Stoney if you paid me.

Tramway will probably still have snow. Santee is fine for all ages. Mostly oldschool slab. The parking for Stoney is along the street. It's not emergency parking (unless you park where it's red) and perfectly legal. Just be careful exiting your car and pulling out, people fly on that road. There are plenty of cheap hotels near JT but honestly, why rule out the camping? If you can find a site, it's some of the prettiest desert camping in the country.
