I didn't want to post this on the general forum, so I'll ask all of you jet-setters out there. I don't have the money to go to Spain, so are there any good DWS spots in Mexico or the Caribbean? Not just a spot where there is a good splash or two. I'm talkin' a place to hang for a week.

Well there are some great shots on this site of summersville lake in west virginia. They fill the lake every summer and drain it in the fall. but they banned DWS there recently?

Yes, Unfortunately DWS was banned by the Army Corps of Engineers in a blanket ban covering any act of entering the water from any height over your own. Thanks a bunch drunk fisher people! (no climber has ever died DWS at Summersville, but some "cliff jumpers" have...aka, drunk fisher people)

if you wanted to be a trend setter you could steal my idea and rent a sail boat with a motor that could sleep 4 and travel the Tennessee River from Knoxville to Chattanooga. THere are sport routes in knoxville that could be DWS and there are plenty of other options... I have traveled down the river several times in various areas just not with the ability to stop and climb. It would be adventurous at a minimum but it could leave you wanting more climbing at the end of the trip....

Hola Keith, I have bouldered and climbed in basaseachic. There are numerous DWS potentials along the river below the falls. There are also places above in the canyon to the left of the falls. I have met and spoken to mexico city locals telling of rivers in chiapas where locals will paddle you out to tall overhanging walls for DWS (psicobloc). Here is some info that could help: http://www.escalando.net/?go=vcat&caid=100

Although not in the U.S., Mexico or the Caribbean, Canada has some DWS. Quetico Provencial Park just north of Boundry Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota has some decent DWS. I've climbed several cliffs in Quetico up to 70 feet tall. On the east side of Lake superior there is the Sand River which is very remote and only accessable by canoe or float plane. I've climbed a few cliffs on the river and on some lakes in that area. All these places I've mentioned have very clear water. I feel having clear water to fall into is important. All these places also are pretty expensive for permits and you have to have a canoe. If you are traveling in these areas, bring a fishing pole. These destinations are home to world class fishing.

Lake Travis in Austin, TX has some potential. I've gone there for cliff jumping, but climbing on limestone can be found.

That sounds fun. How much rock is there? Is the rock typical Tennessee sandstone? Are there good islands to camp on? How many days would you plan for the trip? Sorry to fire questions off at you but it seems like a great climbing/adventure trip and you seem to have the lowdown. Munky

Another spot in Ontario that could be good is Devil rock in Cobalt. Haven't seen it from close in though, but pretty confident it would work. I don't know how high is too high for DWS though... You could get 100+ fee there, and great roped climbing around too. A little further north than you asked for though.

Watch out for snakes and centipedes though. I have had a snake swimming towards me and a centipede crawling up me foot at the same time. Lake Whitney and Possum Kingdom Lake in Texas also has DWS potential, never been myself though.

There's about a trillion granite-rimmed lakes in the Continental Shield, for starters. You'd just have to go to them in summer, for bearable water temps.

Oh. Reading closer now I see you specifically want Mexico or the Caribbean. I recall bouldering about on some seaside cliffs near the ruins of Tulum in the Yucatan. Stuck my hand in a crack only to get slapped by an iguana's tail.

I know here in VT there is some all over Lake Champlain. Also, in the BVI's, there are the Baths, but I don't think that's very DWS friendly. Maybe the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula?

I have heard about the limestone climbing on the costal cliffs of Cayman Brac. Looks pretty cool. Lots of sport climbing, but how long can you trust bolts right above the sea in the tropics?

I've climbed on the Brac and it's not for DWS. There're plenty of big waves, difficulties in getting out of the water, and far too much rough limestone for some serious grating. My approach shoes were chewed up just walking on it. I'd hate to actually get skin contact on that stuff. The sport routes are fun. The original stainless steel bolts are almost all replaced with titanium bolts, which are withstanding the corrosion. It's pretty scary when you climb by a stainless bolt and it comes out in your hands when you give it a bit of a pinch.

I’ve seen people DWS'n Chainman’s in Canmore using the reservoir, although I think only the hottest of days would make it tolerable. brrr glacial water.
